AZ supreme court says all abortions (at any week) are illegal unless to save life of mother being appealed - 2 week stay until it's enacted AZ is one of the biggest swing states this fall, so there will likely be big implications for this
In a historic decision Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled the state must adhere to a 160-year-old law barring all abortions except in cases when “it is necessary to save” a pregnant person’s life – a significant ruling that will make a Civil War-era abortion law enforceable in the state.
------------- Supreme Court justices heard opening arguments in the case last December, when abortion rights opponents claimed the state should revert to the near-total ban, and reproductive rights advocates asked the court to affirm a state law passed in 2022 allowing abortions until 15 weeks.
Then-Republican Gov. Doug Ducey signed the law less than three months before the country’s highest court overturned Roe v. Wade. The 2022 law made an exception for medical emergencies and required physicians to file a report with the Arizona Department of Health Services if an abortion is performed after 15 weeks, but did not provide exceptions for cases of rape and incest.
Per Axios - Arizonans will likely vote on a ballot measure in November to protect abortion rights through the 24th week of pregnancy — which could drive up Democratic enthusiasm and turnout, hurting both Trump and Lake.
As of a week ago, the groups organizing to put abortion on the ballot for November say that they have 100k+ more signatures than they need. Signatures are due by July 3rd and they will still be having people sign to ensure there are enough (even with challenges).

My father the republican or die has decided this is a bridge too far and will not be voting for any republicans in AZ and will vote against any abortion bans. The world might actually be ending.
All our top officials in AZ are Dem: Governor, Senators, County Recorder, Attorney General. Our AG put out a statement that as long as she's in office, no doctor or woman will be prosecuted for abortion.
The abortion referendum should be clear to get on the ballot, but the GOP is doing other things (like trying to get voting by mail outlawed) to interfere with it. On the local reddit sub, someone pointed out that Democrats have lost 60k registered voters here while Republican registry is up, so that is incredibly depressing. Regardless, I think the referendum should pass by a clear margin.
In the meantime, PPs and other providers are going to close, and doctors are going to leave the state. I just found a new gyn practice I want to switch to (I am post menopausal now but with issues) via a pelvic pain specialist I followed, and I was just waiting for them to onboard a full time gynecologist. Now I wonder if they'll get that person.
I'm so stressed and worried about all the women in all the different kinds of situations that will not be able to get an abortion here until at least November. This is horrible.

This is shitty. And people should be able to access whatever care they need. But A reminder that people can get pills by mail in all 50 states. Options are available at plancpills.org and ineedana.com Pills are available to anyone who needs them. Spread the word, especially if you’re in a state with restrictions/bans.
All my H's family live in AZ. Two are young adults (19 & 20). They are all of voting age and only two are conservative until death no matter what. H and I were talking with the 19 yr old about voting just last week when she was visiting us. We encouraged her to get engaged and do her research before voting.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Where is a good place to donate? Pdq, I received wonderful care at Planned Parenthood this past summer and had planned to donate there, but I know there are other places out there who may need more assistance.

redhead610,NNAF or your local abortion funds are great. We love monthly donors and have people who donate $5 each month, anything helps individuals obtain their abortions.

When you make a decision like this and only a tiny percent of your constituents support it, you're a dictatorship now. I hope they fuck around and find out like Ohio did (about abortion anyway, we're still fucked on so many things).

And scout8 Thank you. I completely forgot about the pinned post. I just checked out the nnaf. I am lucky to live in a state where we are well protected, but want to make sure others can also get the help they need.

Even states with abortion protections have abortions funds and even with protections people often have to jump through hoops to get care. And often states with protections the funds help cover clinic costs for people who travel to the state. Just pointing that out cause none of us can get complacent and even in states with protections funds and other sources need money (or volunteers).

wanderingback,Yes thank you so much for saying this because its true, the states that have abortions available have been seeing the influx of patients coming from out of state to receive their abortions. Also, many of the funds that operate in states where abortions are no longer legal will use the donations to help individuals travel or have grants waiting at clinics when those seeking abortions pay for their abortion procedures. So your donations are making a difference.
The previous provider I mentioned travels to other states to provide abortions and last week did a interview where she had 2 individuals that she provided abortions for on her flight back home and it hasnt been the first time its happened to her but that was just recent example of what is going on with abortions right now.
But newly-signed bills don't go into effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session. It is still unclear when the ongoing session will end. The session continues while Republican legislative leadership and Hobbs negotiate the state budget. Last year the session did not end until July 31.
That delay could result in the near-total ban going into effect in June before the repeal takes it off the books.
90 days until effective, should have never come to this…etc.
Continuing to donate $ to Ruben Gellego, prepare to write postcards (https://postcardstovoters.org/) and do what I can in my community for November.
If you have time (even 1/2 hour a week to write a few), I encourage everyone to write postcards from the link I posted. This org supports so many campaigns (even at the very local level) throughout the year and you can pick how many or little you want to write by a certain timeframe.
I also like spending time relaxing and feeling a bit crafty when doing the postcards.
aam2012 Thanks for the reminder. I’ve done vote forward and postcards in the past. The postcards are definitely easier / less cost. I always wonder if people will be annoyed with a postmark from CA but I also know the lists are likely Dem voters. We might be taking a trip to AZ soon (and definitely before the election) so maybe I should write a bunch and mail them while I’m there.
