I just wrote a post that disappeared. So here I go again. Highway 13 is the scenic route saudade refers to here.
Saudade is referring to the island closest to bayfield. I forgot to mention that one, but it could easily be another full day in your itinerary. It is the only one that a car ferry boat goes to and is the only one not within the national lakeshore. However, it is still an apostle island. There are 22 islands. The tour boat I mentioned would go around many of the islands. The grand tour is great. I probably just made it Kind of confusing and a bit in the weeds with details here.
Bayfield chamber of commerce has a great website for specific information on all of the islands & also I recommend the NPS website. Both can link you to lodging information as well.
Be sure to start looking at hotels now - especially for places like Duluth and Bayfield. Summer is tourist season and it’s hard to find places to stay on the weekend.
It’s also so so fun to be on both sides of Lake Superior/to see across and realize how big it truly is. (ie Duluth or Two Harbors and then Bayfield)
Definitely avoid the 4-5 days around Grandmas Marathon.
And plan lots and lots of time for construction delays - especially if traveling in MN over the weekend.
For Mpls/St Paul - I agree that staying near mall of America is a good idea based on what you want to do. I would avoid staying in either downtown.
