Dd2 has a tournament with her club team this weekend near our beach house. The club team has not won a game all season and has scored a grand total of FIVE goals. We all assumed they would get knocked out quickly and play the consolation match this afternoon. Championship game is Monday. No one booked a hotel room for Sunday night.
Yesterday they beat their first opponent 4-0. Their regular coach had a conflict so a parent stepped in. He has coached every kid on the club team previously, and he shifted all of the positions around. Dd2, who has played midfield for 3 seasons, got shifted back to defense - her happy place! Others moved as well… and OMG the came together FINALLY! Won their second game 3-1.
So now they play again today, against the team they’re tied with for first place in the bracket, and will play them again in the semis no matter what (they are too far ahead of the other teams to get knocked out of the semis). They lost to that team badly in the regular season, but may be able to pull it off if they play like they did yesterday… which will be a huge pain for all of the parents 😂😂
mae0111, if they don’t fire the regular coach after this, I don’t know what it would take. Isn’t this the guy with two daughters on the team who always get plenty of playing time?
mommyatty - he has 2 daughters but they play on different teams that he also coaches for the club. He occasionally brings his older DD up to play on DD2’s team, and she gets a lot of playing time when he does.
They lost both games today. They played well, but those teams were lights out. She cried so hard after the game because the season is over and she doesn’t think she is going to make the team next year. He has to cut a few kids (18 slots, 20-21 tried out - 2 kids are leaving and a few new kids showed up). She is probably middle of the pack, but the lower tier kids may be kept over her due - one kid is the DD of the new assistant, a few kids have siblings in the club, etc. It’s hard to know. But she wants to stay. So we will see…
I wish our soccer season was over. DD has 3 games and DS has 5 games in the next 2 weekends because DS’s team got weird with the scheduling. He had 3 weekends off and they could have scheduled games on at least 1 of those weekends but they just crammed them all in the end.
Dd2’s club coach must have sensed our anxiety because he emailed me to let me know that they are offering DD2 a slot. She is thrilled! I’m relieved that she has a slot because she would have been absolutely crushed. But I’m also hoping that the new assistant changes things. The small changes he made over the weekend made a huge difference, but they should have been made earlier in the season to give the kids time to adjust. Oh well!
DD1’s soccer saga continues. She is playing on a lovely club team with two friends from her current team for the fall. She seems to like the kids and the coach so yay.
I did have to buy her uniform today and it was $195 😳😳😳
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
erbear - ugh it is uniform year here as well. So she will need them for her club and her spring travel team. It’s a hit when it happens…
I bought her a new soccer backpack to replace her 3 year old one. She got it at Christmas and had been using it all spring… and this weekend, the seam popped and the zipper broke. That bag cost like $50 and I’m really mad about it! So it’s with a tailor right now to see if they can fix it.
DD2 is finally back to swim team after all her time off for her illness and she’s lost so much strength and speed. I feel so bad watching practice today. They’re letting her use fins even when no one else is to help her build back up. I know she’ll get there again, but I can tell she’s frustrated at being the slowest kid and taking breaks. I am proud that she’s sticking with it and getting back out there though! Hopefully we get some fun meets scheduled soon to give her a goal to work towards.

Well, total swim team fail on my part. I thought swim team went through the whole summer and included the summer meets. Turns out this session ends next week and then I'd have to register her again for the next session. So she basically missed the entire session we signed up for and no meets were included in this round, it was just a training round. We've decided to just scrap it and cut our losses. She's busy enough with camps and other plans this summer that she doesn't really care if she keeps going or not so I'm going to save the money and the time in our schedule. And now she won't be getting exhausted for nothing.
A couple moms and I were trying to figure which coach and teammates to request for summer basketball for our daughters, and one of them said ‘do you also feel like you’re an unpaid sports agent for your kids?’
It reminded me of this thread and how much effort we all have to go to in order to get our kids on the right teams so that they’re happy and our lives aren’t miserable. I had no idea of the effort involved in that before having kids in sports!
Soccer is DONE! DS's team managed to win one game this season and still walk away feeling like winners who had a great time. I love that for them but I also wish they realized that taking it a little more seriously would be beneficial.
DD is gearing up for a competition in a couple weeks.. so in addition to her normal team practice, they have a second weekday practice and a weekend 7am practice... on top of her other 3 lesson/classes. Normally the June competition is the "big" show of the year and there's an end in sight.. this year, we're hosting the national competition in July, so the younger girls will compete there too (typically only our senior and adult team travel to it). So I'm guessing we'll be at tons of practice for the foreseeable future...
We've also added on a second private lesson, which her coach suggested, but I agreed to largely out of laziness. We're tacking it onto the weekend early practice, so I can drop her off at 6:40 and be home by 7 and not need to be back to pick her up until 10:15 vs having to stay and socialize with other parents while I'd rather sleep. (The drive time doesn't justify going home for a single practice)
She is doing her first competition solo and terrified because she knows she's going up against a friend. And for the national competition, she'll be submitting two solos, so will be going up against more friends, I'm sure. (That competition is crazy with close to 800 skaters and I can't make heads or tails of who she's competing against!)
