This seems like a waste of time. He should have plead guilty and asked the judge for leniency based on his behavior since the crime and taken his punishment.
Am I missing something? This trial is because he checked a box on a form saying he didn’t use drugs, which was part of the background check for a gun?
This really seems to play right into everything about gun purchases, background checks, etc. Is it just going to trial to “show” people of both parties get prosecuted on “bogus” charges?
edit: I’m all about not lying on government forms and all. And that it is wrong. But, but but
When pleas fall apart, it's usually because the defendant has a change of mind. What the judge did here was HIGHLY unusual. I remember an article saying the judge scrutinized the plea for 3 hours - I can't recall a single instance of that happening to myself or a colleague in the 22 years I've been at my job.

Also, he didn’t hurt, kill, do…anything….with the gun he obtained..am I understanding correctly?

Frankly, this doesn't matter. He purchased the gun illegally.

Understood and agree. That wasn’t my point.
Sure, he purchased illegally, but there are literally thousands of cases of that which never get prosecuted let alone go to trial after years of resources spent. This former de ag lays it out well.
"The president has said for months that he would not pardon his son...Despite the White House statements in recent months, some Republicans have insisted the president will pardon his son." They cannot imagine a world where consequences apply to rich white guys, eh?
Also, I did not know this: "...Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter Biden’s late brother, Beau Biden. Hunter Biden began a romantic relationship with Hallie Biden after Beau Biden’s death in 2015." That is...something.
I'm sad for the Biden family, but I'm not surprised. I hope Biden stays true to his word and doesn't pardon him. I wish him and his family the best.
I disagree. I hope he does. Not now, but before he leaves office. This entire trial was gross and politically motivated. The judge not agreeing to the plea was unprecedented and like someone mentioned above, these are things that are normally not prosecuted.

I see where your coming from, but at the same point he acted illegally. You can't say you believe in the justice system except when it's your son. I hope his sentencing is appropriate.

That it's unprecedented doesn't make it inherently wrong. Convicting a former president on felony fraud charges was also unprecedented. There's a lot *waves hands* going on in 2024 that is unprecedented.
HB's conviction doesn't bring me any joy, but a pardon -- what, on the rationale that "well other people don't get prosecuted for doing the same illegal thing my son did"? -- would be self-serving on Biden's part. It would be tremendously hypocritical and rightfully polarizing. The whole thing sucks, but the proper remedy for HB is appeal, if he feels there were errors in the trial court's decision. It's not to have his dad swoop in and say nah, my son/his circumstances are special. I would lose a lot of respect for Biden if he were to cave to that temptation.
Hunter Biden purchased a gun by lying on the form. He purchased it during the depths of his addiction, probably with the intent of self harm. This is why the laws are in place. To keep him and others safe when they are at their lowest. Should much of what happened with this case have happened? No. The plea deal should have gone through but it didn't. H. Biden is now facing the justice that most people who are not white and rich would be facing. I don't like that the system is this way, but that's where we are.

He acted illegally, yes. And also in an illegal way that is ignored daily. And, in the grand scheme is really minor. Sentencing should have been a fine, a probation, something that didn't involve 5 years of research and court time. How much money was spent on this?!
Biden shouldn't pardon because it is illegal but also can be weaponized (so law and optics are involved). Also, the Rs are wanting to grant unsurpassed pardons for truly heinous crimes Trump was infolved in that resulted in destruction and death. So, high crimes and misdemeanors, cool, sure, but 11 days of illegal keeping of a weapon after lying on a form that isn't even required in their redbed states?
The balance sheet is off.
I'm probably one of the most anti-gun people here. I still don't think this is such a horrible crime. Meanwhile Kyle Rittenhouse is lauded. This is 100% political.
It’s weird that people say this type crime is not prosecuted. And that it was only 11 days.
I served on a jury where a convicted felon went to a gun range, lied on the paperwork, shot a few rounds, and posted it on FB. So… an hour? He was definitely prosecuted, found guilty, and definitely doesn’t have the luxury of daddy pardoning him, even if he has to wait until after the election.
And now the nutter Trump supporters are saying that OF COURSE he was found GUILTY!!! The dems rigged it all for Hunter to be the fall guy!!! We've predicted this from the START!!!

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I'm pretty sure they didn't spend 5 years chasing that charge and subsequently rejected a guilty plea. This is extremely unusual.
Either we think the laws should be on the books and prosecutable, or we shouldn't have the laws there at all. This was a pretty easy slam dunk for the prosecution. Everyone knows he did it. Should he go free because he's a Dem? Is that it? Or because he's a rich white guy? This talking out of both sides of our mouths is stupid. Hunter Biden is the exact type of person this law was made to stop buying guns. He broke the law. Does it matter if it was politically motivated? No, it fucking does not. Shit, going after Trump on the 34 felony convictions was also politically motivated to the extent that he also broke the law and people cared enough to research and build a case against him. That's what happened here too.
