Next Thursday... It will be interesting. I like the format/rules (at least going into it), we'll see how it turns out. No live audience. hosts: Jake Tapper and Dana Bash
He's already setting the stage for such tomfoolery.
The format does disadvantage him, but that's because he's a toddler with no emotional regulation who rambles word salad and interupts others, playing up to audiences. These are entirely reasonable and fair constraints for a future president.
I still laugh remembering when Biden, notoriously calm and collected, lost it on him in 2020 and said something to the effect of just shut up, man. I still get chills, not the good kind, of seeing him looming menacingly behind Clinton.
I believe this is the first debate with commercials. CNN will also display their logo. Other networks and show the debate but most keep the logo. They can add their own. Also, they have to call it "CNN's presidential debate." They can air their own commericals. The piece I read about these technical differences ultimately argued it's a good thing and will lead to better production value or somesuch. I'm pretty ambivalent about that. I do like the rules.
I'm looking forward to the orange one turning red as his mic is relentlessly cut off. He'll probably shout into the void anyway.
I will be shocked if he actually shows, and can't believe TFG/his team agreed to this. It puts him at a huge disadvantage, since he thrives on crowd response, and has nowhere close to the self discipline required to answer a question in the time allotted.
If he shows, I'd bet money he just starts yelling to interrupt, since his mic is muted.
Former President Trump and his allies are laying the foundation to dismiss a strong debate performance by President Biden as a charade.
Trump and other conservatives have in recent days floated the baseless claim that if Biden does well at next week’s debate in Atlanta, it will be because he’s using some kind of performance enhancer.
I don't know what kind of performance enhancer they think he's on, but I'd like some of it please.
If we later find that Biden is given something like Adderall at times, I would not be surprised one bit…but also not at all upset. I used to work in Neurorehab, and it was not uncommon for patients to be given a low dose of a stimulant to help them be able to tolerate the many hours of therapy that they needed to do that day. If the POTUS’ physician feels that a stimulant is indicated for him to be effective and efficient with a schedule that is far more grueling than a vast majority of Americans could even fathom or tolerate…so be it.
Adderall and other stimulants might give someone “more energy”, but they don’t help with decision making or help someone know the answers to questions! If someone is truly experiencing cognitive decline/dementia, no amount of “performance enhancing drugs” are going to make them more coherent, intelligent, or knowledgeable about foreign policy.
I’ve also heard speculation from R’s that they think CNN worked with Biden to come up with the questions. They’re not getting questions ahead of time, correct? I’d be interested in seeing a debate if they had the questions ahead of time, but weren’t allowed notes. In this election especially, I care a lot about who the people behind/around the President are…if they work together to come up with answers and the candidates have to be able to share that independently, it might be less of a circus and more reflective of their administration. I don’t care that people say Biden has “handlers.” Newsflash…they ALL do. Having good people around you is critically important!
I have no faith Trump will show, so my biggest interest is how they will handle it when he doesn't. Just double the questions Biden is given and let him run with them? Cut the event time down?
I'm also interested in how much notice Trump will give before chickening out, and what exactly the excuse will be.

I honestly have no desire to watch. We know Trump doesn’t play by the rules. It seems most Americans have made up their mind since we went through this election 4 years ago. Plus I just try to avoid watching Trump on TV as much as possible.
My DD came home from her part time job annoyed because some grouchy old guy showed up for a shift and would. not. stop. talking. about. Trump. Apparently, the big complaint tonight was that Biden is too old. Too old, too old, too old, blah, blah, Amurica!
I told DD that Trump was 3 years younger and she was all “What?!”

And at those she's cognition is far more important than the actual number. Clearly trump is nowhere near competent cognitively.
At really stops yesterday he was rambling about the debate. Asking the crowd if he should be mean and nasty. He also again said Biden would be on drugs.
And he repeated and defended his weird electrocution boat shark thing, saying it was a smart story. His retelling was even more meandering than the first time
I was listening to a piece on NPR this morning about this. The debate is at 9:30 pm...which seems stupid late for these two old guys, no??
They were saying that Trump really feeds off crowds during his campaigns, debates, speeches, etc, and that without having an audience, he won't have the feedback of "how far he can push the envelope."
Overall, I feel sick to my stomach about this. It has been so refreshing not having daily news stories about the fuckery happening in the oval office and just hearing Trump's name again with regards to being president again makes me want to cry.

I was wondering when the air time would be (hadn't yet looked it up).
That's my morning. I don't think I can handle it then. But if there's a live thread and live text feed with commentary I'm game. I don't want to stroke out hearing his voice let alone all the lies

And they are going to be standing the whole time… which they normally do, but apparently they’ve made it a big deal this time? Because they’re old?

That's 6:30pm west coast time but honestly how many people watch live anyways? I know I'll be either reading the highlights here or elsewhere and maybe watching some of it at 9pm my time (west coast) because that's when I get to sit down and relax before bed.

I'm always curious about # people vs # states. I know the bay majority of us population is either in eastern or western time zones. 930 is nearly bedtime for a lot of people. But 630 may still be making dinner.
I think what I'm trying to say is these debates are anachronistic and worthless. Really all it does is provide those for pundits and late night tv.
If you truly don't know if you'll vote for a felon vs the guy who's had the best economic stats since the 50s, no debate will help you. Especially if you're believing all the gop lies about economy, blaming him for your grocery bill or mcd order.
Ftr I also wonder about counting states vs % population when people say things like half the states legalized weed. I'm willing to guess that accounted for way more than half the people especially if Florida joins as it's on the ballot in November
