Ls: The $3k maintenance and repair costs for DS's car are on this month's cc bill, so it was a big cc payment this month. DS and his travel baseball team signed up for one more tournament this season, but not enough teams signed up for their age group (14u), so they are playing up in 15u. But that means he has to have a different kind of bat than is allowed for 14u, so we had to buy him a new BBCOR bat (not sure how much it cost, as DH just ordered it, but I'm guessing btw $300-$400). He will need a BBCOR bat for next year anyways, so I guess we are spending the $ now instead of next year.
W: I signed up for YNAB! It's way easier than using hand-rolled spreadsheets.
I think the spending freakout I've had this year was driven by travel, plus paying for travel and summer camps at the same time. The month to month expenses are within reason, we just need to do a better job spreading out big purchases.

W: Or I'm calling it a win, anyways. We got DS a baseball catcher's gear set for Christmas, and the padding on the helmet is already coming unglued. I emailed Mizuno customer service on Saturday and sent them the purchase receipt and a picture of the helmet to see if we could get a new one under the one-year warranty. I got an email today saying that they will send us a new helmet, covered under the warranty. So I am happy about that! But also hoping we don't have the same issue with the new one they send.

Our big win is that my DH retired! We are so excited. His last day was Friday.
Our losses this month are that my car is in need of a repair and it's a 2013--hoping we can get the car fixed and avoid a replacement for at least 50,000 more miles. We also had to pay for our teenagers car insurance this summer after nine months off when he was in college. Holy smokes boy teen drivers are expensive. He also had one fender bender at 16 so that doesn't help.
Win-ish? I fully expected our home insurance to increase by 30% because we had a major wildfire tear through our city last summer and everyone here has had an increase. So I budgeted accordingly and saved the additional amount. I got the invoice yesterday and it was ~27%. Ever so slightly less than expected and I wasn't shocked by the increase.
sadlebred , I am so sorry you lost your job! Was this something you anticipated or were you completely blindsided? Either way, it really sucks.
There were some RIFs a few weeks ago, and a lot of those people were offered jobs with the outsourcer. We weren't-none of us. (Might not be a bad thing; I hear nightmares about them.) We had NO CLUE we were up next until we got a strange meeting invite with our big boss and division manager (big big big boss) in an hour today at lunch. They let our team know together. So, time to figure out what to do next. If anyone has contacts that have a remote IT job available, my LinkedIn and Resume are updated! We got 60 days notice, so we have a paycheck and benefits til then. Plus, I'll get a puny severance.
sadlebred, that really sucks. I'm glad you have a bit of time to apply to new positions and get a financial game plan in place. Losing a job anytime for any reason is shitty though.

sadlebred, I'm really sorry. It's good that you have about 2 months of notice time to begin to look for other jobs and prepare financially (as much as possible).
Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus
Thanks, ya'll! I plan to start hitting up my network in the next week. If anyone is hiring remote IT, I'm happy to send my resume. We got 60 days notice. Belt tightening and budget cutting also begins next week. Of course:
L: I just paid for this August's streaming services, online newspapers, and several other things.
Another L: We had high winds here last week. I had several gigantic branches fall from a sweet gum tree. I had to get my tree service out here to get rid of them. $350. Ouch.

L: dh bought a new truck. He drove 5 hours away because they gave him 10k off, a great deal on trade in, we put a decent amount down, but now we have a car loan foe the first time in like 10 years. Was hoping to have another 6 months but...
