Can you imagine how different our entire physical and political world would be if the Supreme Court sided with the recount and Gore became President in 2000?
We should have an alternate universe tv series where Gore won the 2000 election, sort of like how “Man in High Castle” depicted what the world would be like if the Axis powers won WW2.
I was watching old debate footage from 2000, and Gore really needed some media training. All the sighing and rolled eyes and general boredom with election stuff did not do him any favors. But he wouldn’t have declared war on Iraq after 9/11 and probably would have made some headway on climate change.

Bad Bunny posted a video montage on his Instagram showing Puerto Rico, history, famous people and accomplishments. The IG auto-translation isn’t perfect but it’s a really beautiful video that is reaching millions of people. The caption just says “garbage.”
The PR and Latino friends I’ve heard from said the 🍊 MSG rally clips have gone viral in their communities, like they have not seen this election. People who are not very political/ not active on social media are posting about it and are incredibly angry.

On the flip side, so did Bush. I was only 18 when he was campaigning and I remember thinking what a horrible public speaker he was, especially compared to past presidents. He got a lot better at public speaking during his first term. I guess it was that period where there was suddenly a lot more media with cable news and the internet, but campaigns were still run very traditionally.
I’m guessing they are fine with it. I don’t think there is any love for Trump in that family.
I don’t know - the fact that George and Laura haven’t endorsed Kamala speaks volumes to me. They may not like him but I bet they are voting for him.
This was also my thought. Their generation and all the ones above them always struck me as “we will vote straight red, always and forever.” The youths seem to be straying which good for them, of course.

The youth, with Dick Cheney toddling along behind.

Their daughter, Barbara, endorsed Harris today and has been campaigning with them.
Yup! That was the comment that started the Bush talk. I’m happy for it, but just because she is voting for Kamala doesn’t mean her parents are. I’m sure many people here can attest to that.

This is just conjecture on my part but Laura Bush came from a democratic family and I believe was a registered Democrat until she married into the family (to not look as though she didn't support the Bushes). A quick Google said she agrees with some Dem social policies.
Right or wrong I think GWB, Laura (and Jeb for that matter) are putting their heads down to not be a target. And Barbara is more willing (or less likely to be blasted)
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I saw that Leonardo DiCaprio endorsed Harris and the first comment was "the first woman over 25 he has ever 'endorsed'" lololol.
Hearing her speak last night; swoon. I really, really hope she wins, but I still worry even if she does, the course of our country is fucked due to how deeply divided we are.
I get that "economic concerns" are most voters top priority & despite the economy being good by the numbers, 1) everybody hates that inflation happened & prices are higher now than before and will never go back down, but aren't going up as much as it did 2) is it that this "recovery" isn't equally/evenly distributed? i.e. the K-recovery where the wealth gap expands and the rich get richer (401k, salary increases) and the poor get poorer?
It's not a winning political strategy to say" the economy is great" because it doesn't feel that way to so many. How do we talk about her policies benefiting working people & fighting against the ultra-rich or massive corporate windfalls?
For reference, i just received this CNN headline....
News Alert: America’s economy is at a historic point ahead of presidential election
The US economy seems to have pulled off a remarkable and historic achievement.
Gross domestic product, which measures all the goods and services produced in the economy, expanded at an annualized rate of 2.8% in the third quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That’s a slightly weaker pace than the second quarter’s 3% rate and above the 2.6% rate economists projected in a FactSet poll. GDP is adjusted for seasonal swings and inflation.
As the US economy continued to expand from July through September, inflation drifted lower toward the Federal Reserve’s 2% target during that same period, the report showed. Several economists tell CNN that the economy has finally pulled off an exceptionally rare achievement known as a soft landing, a scenario in which inflation is tamed without a recession.

sonrisa, sent, y'all are aware that it's Bush Republicans behind The Lincoln Project, aren't you?
Maybe it's because I'm local to Houston and some charities associated with the Bush family, but i thought this was common knowledge?
The way that Trump talked about Mexicans and people in TPS status sickened GW and GHWB. There are strong ties between the Bush family and Mexican Americans in Texas. GW also did a whole series of portraits of immigrants and created a book with stories of their lives in the process of coming to America. He hated Bin Ladin and Hussein, but not all Middle Eastern nor all brown people.
I don't know why they wouldn't endorse Kamala publicly. But they seem to do plenty behind the scenes to undermine him.

OH MY GOSH. I had to reread your post several times because I kept thinking of Project 2025 and was reeeaaaally trying to figure out how the rest of your post fit with that.
Michelle, I didn't know that. I pretty much get my news from this board and Propublica. Thanks for sharing that info. I read on here that GW and Laura won't endorse anyone because (paraphrasing) "GW Bush doesn't do those kinds of things anymore and prefers to just quietly chill in retirement." By not publicly endorsing a candidate, to me that feels like an implicit endorsement for the R candidate. Especially when his VP has made an endorsement.

He may also want to keep his daughters close to him. He was anti-choice, but also had some common sense. I remember when he struggled with his beliefs about stem cell research con's because of his belief about when life begins, compared to the benefits for neurodegenerative diseases. So he sought a compromise to use the stem cell lines that were already being used in research and not prohibit continued research with those, and instead prohibited new cells being added. I know many of us here would say, "they are just cells - they aren't a life yet" but I valued that effort to compromise for the greater good overall. I imagine he is anti-abortion except for all these cases of the threat to the life of the mother, and would probably say after having daughters that it really isn't his business to force one of them to have a baby after being raped, especially if due to incest as a minor. And he'd encourage someone in that situation to talk to their daughter, religious figure, pray about it, and go from there. But not overly legislate it.
He'd probably outlaw all other abortions though as early as he could. So he probably likes that aspect of Trump's politics. So he stays out of it.
I know he respects President Obama and Michelle Obama, and he has been very clear and public about that. He tolerated Bill Clinton because his dad did great work with Clinton, but GW seemed to get along with Hillary and steer clear of Bill.
I just can't imagine he has any respect for Trump after all that. But I wish he'd pull up his texas boots and say it outloud and proud. If he did, I think a lot more southerners would question themselves.
oh and as for Dick Cheney - the crazy right threatened Liz's life. He's over it.

i think the opposite is true. If anyone else had been the republican to follow him in office, he would have endorsed them. He would have provided at least a tepid endorsement of a republican potted plant. That was standard practice - publicly you stand with your team and do your disagreements behind the scenes. Not endorsing Trump speaks volumes.
