It doesn't feel right to just call him a dog....Bogie was a member of the family and my first baby. He was 14. We named him Bogie after Humphrey Bogart. We adopted him from a rescue at 6.5 weeks old – he had mange, worms, and had never been outside. The night we brought him home we let him explore the front yard and he put his tiny paws on a giant sycamore tree and whined the most adorable whine at the smell of the tree and the squirrels that lived in it.
He had earned at least 20 different nicknames, including "7 nation puppy" because of the white stripes down his legs, “Mr. Moo” b/c of the cow-like sounds he made, mush-a-moo b/c of the mushy soft fur around his face which our good friend affectionately termed his "face meat." We knew he was part lab but jokingly told inquirers his “breed” was Virginia Water Hound b/c he was such a good swimmer. He looked like an otter in the water, though we’d like to forget the time he caught a gosling (he did let it go).
DH and I have been married for 15 years, we moved into this house 12 years ago, started a family 10 yrs ago, completed our family 7 years ago. Bogie was there for just about all of it - whether at the center or as a supporting player when the toddlers were holding court and trying to play dress up with him. In the later years he had reached the "elder states dog" status. He had quiet, contented wisdom - old dog energy. He was by my side every day when I worked, he followed me around the house and trusted me to take care of anything he needed. He scoped out all the best places to relax, including the top of the stairs where he could keep tabs on the goings on of the house.
There's so much more I could say....I'm so broken now

I'm really sorry. Yes, definitely a member of the family. I'm certain you gave Bogie a great life. I'm not a pet owner, but I appreciate all who take in animals and love them the way you did.
I am so sorry for your loss. Sometimes it amazes me how giving and loving our animals are with us, and the hole they leave behind in our hearts. You and your family will be in my heart.
What a beautiful tribute to Bogie that you've shared. I am so sorry for your loss - they truly are family and losing them is so painful. Thinking of you and sending big hugs.
I'm so sorry for your loss. It is so heartbreaking to lose a beloved member of the family. People always say, you gave him a good life. I remember the only reply I could have when we lost our beloved was, no, HE gave US a good life. Sending thoughts and hoping you find solace in happy memories in the coming days.
