My purse, work bag (if I'm going into the office the next day), and DS's backpack all go on chairs at the end of the dining room table we don't use for meals. It's not my favorite, but it's convenient to the breakfast bar where DS does hw, and to the fridge for grabbing lunches and water bottles in the mornings.
If we're having people over and need the chairs, DS's backpack goes in a closet and my purse goes in the home office.
I've tried leaving it in a spot near the door to the garage that's our main entry point, but inevitably I need something from it and it's a pain to go down and get it, and then remember to put whatever it was back.
We have a big farm style dining table with a bench seat that is pushed up against the wall. I put my work bag there. It's 50/50 on if I put my purse there too or just leave it on the kitchen counter (our entry is through the garage straight into the kitchen/dining room).

I put my work bag and my purse on a chair at the kitchen table. It's just me and DH so it doesn't interfere with anyone being able to sit there. It's not the best spot, but I always put it there so I always know where it is. On Fridays I have been trying to put my work bag on the floor in the coat closet in the hallway to signify that I don't have to deal with that crap for a couple of days lol.
Like jennistarr1, I hang mine from the banister. My stairs are right by my front door, so it's always handy when I leave the house. I put my keys on the stairs, between the banister spindles.
But it's also just me in the house. If there were more people wanting to have their stuff in the same space, it'd be too much clutter.

we have cubbies right when you walk in from the garage - and also a bench. so it starts on the bench with my backpack and then it bugs me and I put the purse in the cubby and the backpack in our room or office.

On a dining room chair (the dining room is the first thing I walk past when I come into the house from the garage). I keep the chair tucked in, so I don't even really have to look at whatever I have sitting there.
I keep my purses in my bedroom closet. I keep my wallet and car keys in a drawer in the kitchen by our side door. Most days I just grab my keys and phone and run out the door. If I bring a purse, I grab my keys, phone, and wallet from the drawer and throw them in my purse before leaving. We have a coat closet, but I just keep coats and shoes in there.
Just inside our front door we have a small shoe rack. I put my purse on the first shelf. We do have a coat closet, but it's not by the front door and very small with no shelves.
I hang it on the back of my bedroom door or in our laundry room.
This is what I do as well, however, in my entire adult life I have never owned a multi level home so it’s not like I would have to climb stairs to go get it when leaving. It’s just down the hall.
If we had a second story I am not sure what I would do honestly.
I don't carry a purse regularly so they stay on the top rack of my closet between uses. I do carry a small satchel/wallet and that just goes on this bulletin board shelf I have in the kitchen. there are key hooks under the shelf where our keys hang from the same shelf.
In a little nook off our kitchen, too small to be called a mud room, we have a table by the door to our garage. The kids and I put our purses and the dog stuff there. One of these days I’m going to install a few nice hooks above the table so we can all hang purses, jackets, etc. Lol, there’s a hall closet right there but we’re all too lazy deal with hangers.
