The anchors are asking “what can we do? Why does this keep happening?”
The guy they were interviewing is like “uh besides what we already do in practicing drills, but we really need to keep kids from being able to access these guns”
Also please look into your local Moms Demand Action group. It’s so important to stay educated on the current bills/laws and help get that education out to others. DM me if you need help finding a local chapter!!
I'm enraged that this is the world my children are growing up in.
Same.
And I’m so angry that my very first response to yet another school shooting is anger followed by heartbreak. I hate my gut reaction isn’t pure heartbreak for students, staff, and their families. We’re so desensitized and it’s starting to be “yet another.”
I don’t know if it makes sense…but I want 100% of my energy going towards the victims, not split with the anger of knowing that we are choosing to let kids and staff die at school instead of actually making changes.
My husband teaches at the same school that our son attends, and I am terrified that there will be a shooting at their school and that I will lose both of them. I literally lie awake at night. This is NOT a normal way to live. What the fuck is wrong with our society that we haven’t fixed this yet?!?!?!

This is terrible.
Last year there was a gun incident at my son's high school. The kid with the gun told a classmate he had it and where it was and thankfully she went to the office and reported it. The next day, a different classmate brought a gun and again a classmate reported. Both students were arrested "without incident". As if that isn't bad enough, for me the worst part was that when I talked with my son after the all clear and students were told they could leave if they wanted, my son said that he wanted to stay at school because the drills worked and they were all safe. The fact that he wasn't even fazed by it and it seemed like a normal part of school they prep for like a fire drill was the sad part.
While back to school shopping, my DD almost talked herself out of not buying a glow in the dark backpack because “what if the intruder drill is real and they find me.”
She’s seven.
I strongly strongly encourage you to get involved - even if it’s the PTA level about how your schools are handling this. Figure out your gun sense candidates and support them LOUDLY. There are things we can do. I am a broken record about this but it’s so important.
My small victory is by posting about this on social media, I’ve had multiple friends reach out saying that they are locking up their guns properly, they are being vocal about asking family and friends about their gun ownership, and being more vocal about gun sense candidates.
We had a lockdown drill at school today and I had to tell my kids that in the event of an actual danger, we couldn't stay in my room, because there's no place that is hidden from windows.
We have trauma bags in our rooms and got training in how to use them to stop major bleeds.
In order to teach math, I have to know how to treat a gunshot wound.
My heart hurts for those affected and I'm terrified mine will be next. I'm so angry

what. the. fuck.
eta: I know this is the direction the US is trending, but seriously. we're teachers not paramedics.
My cousin teaches elementary and (before today) her class’ trauma bag was a trauma bucket and there was a bit of a big deal that duct tape “could be used to stop bleeding”. Goodie. And to make a tourniquet with only a pencil.
Except they didn’t include a pencil in the bucket. So, in a bleeding emergency, find one ?
rachers, I don't have kids and your post gutted me. Kids that young should get to be innocent.
I will vote. If texas big cities get big enough, maybe we can turn the state blue... one day.
Thank you. Truly.
I was born in TX and my family still lives there. My Dad (super repub and all that entails) heard me on the radio and said it started a huge conversation at his job site and by the end, he said his crew were all conversing and were really moved for change. It’s why I keep talking and talking.
There’s a middle ground that I truthfully feel is the closest we can get at this point. I tell people all the time - I’m not anti-gun (which honestly I am, but I also know to read an audience and in full transparency my H is a hunter so he owns guns) but I stress and stress gun safety for storage and also stricter gun laws.
You’d be surprised that pro-gun people will listen when you have facts and statistics and also just sharing your story. When it becomes personal their faces change.
My H and I are victims of gun violence and also I talk so much about having a child in school. But it leans into suicide, domestic violence, accidental shootings. All of it. What I’ve learned is pretty much everyone has a connection to a gun related incident.
My mantra has been “I don’t want to take your guns but I need you to help me with stricter laws regarding who has access and better storage so your kid/neice/grandkid/etc is never a news story and a funeral"
Arkansas is I think the lowest regarding gun laws and Georgia isn’t much better. These are tangible things we need to educate ourselves on and even though it’s unfortunately not overnight, we need to vote this out. The consequence to gun violence shouldn’t be innocent people (CHILDREN) dying - it should be the people selling guns, people obtaining guns, and the people who are using them to murder.

@@ Today I realized one of the reasons summer vacation feels more relaxed even though we still have busy schedules is that I don’t have the constant fear my kids will be shot at school. There’s already been a false alarm that a kid brought a weapon to our middle school (the home was also searched and the kid was arrested for something but they didn’t have a weapon at school). I feel more angry than heartbroken right now.
Reading the responses here and wanted to respond to send (((hugs))) to you all.
The male masculinity problem comment stuck out to me as I don’t think it’s been mentioned before, but seems to align with other issues happening currently in the US (i.e, right to control one’s own body, women who have “no kids” have less of a say, etc..)
This makes me so angry. If threats are reported and still nothing happens then I don’t even know.
This seems like something a subpoena could have easily confirmed if the child lied about making threats on a gaming platform….
The FBI received SEVERAL reports… on a THIRTEEN YEAR OLD!!!!!
Also agree, arrest the dad.
Edit: Is this where I also mention his name is Colt? I don’t have kids so I’m genuinely asking… is that a name you see often, a coincidence or potentially speaks to the parents?

I know one person who named child 1 colt and child 2 middle name Wesson.
He was sro. He posted pictures of his cute very young kids at breakfast with gun nearby and unsecured.
It's an anecdote of one, but it definitely make me and and full of judgement for this very close friend of someone so close to me

From my years of working in schools I’d say it’s not common but not unique either. Colton is more common. So they didn’t necessarily name him for the gun or the beer. But regardless I hope the parents are held accountable.

First and foremost, this is a gun issue. Fuck the NRA and fuck the GOP and fuck the thoughts and prayers. Pro-life my ass. No one needs a military-grade weapon in their house. Take them all. And then implement stringent legislation. I want background checks. I want waiting periods. I want mandatory quarterly training. I want required storage and if someone gets a call that a person in your house is making threats or that you are not following any of the above rules, I want your guns taken away. I also want parents to fucking go to jail when they have been demonstrably negligent and their kid kills themselves or another child. In reading what this kid’s home life was like, this was an epic failure on so many levels. This kid was failed by his parents, failed by the school, failed by the government organizations that purportedly looked into him last year and as a result other people’s loved ones are dead. For SHAME.
But, and TW TW TW
We also have, as I mentioned above, a global toxic male problem. This is not limited to the U.S., but the U.S. is where they can get unfettered access to guns. In just the last two days I read stories about a 70-year old man in France who, over the past 10 years, drugged his wife and invited over 70 men ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s to come and rape her over 90 times. They arrested him for something else and found all of this material. And, while 30% of the men he invited said no, NOT ONE OF THEM REPORTED IT!!
And in Kenya, Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei was murdered by her partner who SET HER ON FIRE.
This shit happens around the globe every single day and men are the biggest perpetrators. The utter disregard for humanity is pervasive and we see it in everything from right wing podcasts to school shootings.
We NEED to teach people - and men specifically - how to care for themselves and to care for others and honest to god I don’t even know where to start with that. Basically, a meteor just needs to take out the planet so we can start all over.
What is wrong with us that we cannot get rid of the guns? It’s heartbreaking. These poor babies.
I'm going to make a bad comparison that is going to make people mad: In the US cars kill more people than guns every single day. Yet we can't have conversations about that because "we need cars" for reasons. So take how you feel about cars, and apply that feeling to guns. That, in a nutshell, is why we can't get rid of guns.
I saw a TikTok and a woman was talking about how all of these kids have been having "Lockdown Training" for years, and they all know what to do in case of a school shooter. The problem is that one of their peers that could eventually shoot up their school has been in that same training the whole time.
So kids are coming up with Scenario B, Scenario C. They can never really feel safe. Where can you hide?
It's heartbreaking. We need common sense gun legislation NOW.

It's a not unpopular name. I just checked and it's been in the mid200's on the ss list for the last several years, Colton is in the top 100. It won't load prior to 2020 for some reason, so I can't see how many my age Colts are out there, but I def went to school with at least one. (who was absolutely a redneck...but I grew up in ruralish PA, so not a shocker there) I'm sure for some people it's a gun association with like, cool manly shit, but it's primarily a term for a young male horse. Or maybe people are naming their kids after cheap malt liquor. Anyway....i'm going with coincidence.

And the "cars are designed for transportation, guns are designed solely for killing" inherent logical counterpoint is absolutely, 100% ignored and actively disputed by anyone who feels about guns the way pixy is describing.
I’m doing a tabling event tomorrow with our Pediatric Association for Be Smart. I’ll help anyone who wants find similar events/opportunities in your area.

Cars are a perfect example. Whenever people ask me why we don't ban cars when more people die by cars I say we should exact the same rules for guns that we do for cars - licensing. You have to take a test and get insurance to have a car - we should do the same for guns. We could have different levels of licensing for guns just like we do with cars. And every gun needs to be registered.
In my perfect world we would just get rid of them, but the above argument tends to shut people up who use the car analogy.
I'm just so mad and sad. I went to Sandy Hook school as my elementary school. The students from SH went to a school in my current town while that school was renovated, and that school is part of the campus for the school my kids went to for elementary school and now for middle school. I knew once SH happened and we did nothing, that was it for us. If 5 and 6 year olds being gunned down didn't make an impact nothing will.
The only hope that I have is that once the boomer generation dies off we'll see change.
