I plan to watch. We watched the Biden/Trump debate, well, we made it halfway because it was such a disaster and so painful. H went to bed and I finished with online commentary and clips. I didn’t know at the time that it would be a watershed moment for Biden’s candidacy and change the trajectory of the nomination and DNC campaign. So, I am glad that I watched it in real time with my own eyes without anyone else’s commentary. Trump is a blight in every way and scheduled events like these are tough to stomach because of him.
I would like to give myself the same chance for Kamala - see and hear it for myself. She’s a joy.
I think the bar for Trump “doing well” is standing on stage & not pooping through his pants onto the floor. If he does that, it will get hailed a victory. The bar for Harris is to cure cancer - all cancer worldwide, so I’m bracing for the media nonsense when it’s over.
Even though the mics will be muted, I guarantee it won't shut him up (apparently this contributed to some of Biden s seeming distraction). So, I hope Harris will use at least some of her response time to say you can't here it, but he just said...
Question about the muting. Will it be muted at the source or at the output? As in, might there be raw recorded audio we don't hear in the live sitting but can be accessed later? I wouldn't put it past him to start calling her names only she can hear, and I want proof if she calls in on it.
This is a great question. I also hope they have the audio.
Here's the info on the microphones and muting:
A campaign official, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe private negotiations, said that a pool would be on hand to hear what the candidates are saying into muted microphones — and that if there is “significant crosstalk,” the network may unmute both microphones. The moderator will warn candidates to stop frequent interruptions, the official said. “Our understanding of these things helped inform our decision to accept muted mics,” the official said.
I’ll be watching (it’s literally my job). I’m really hoping Harris starts every “turn” with “he did not answer that question” before moving onto her answers
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I also can't decide. I have such a visceral reaction to him and his voice. On the other hand, I want to watch Harris destroy him in real time.
Same.
I read he insisted nobody be standing on blocks (which is really typically for people behind podiums on TV). I hope she wears her highest heels to crush the small man who can’t bear the thought of not seeming big and intimidating.

DH and I talked about this last night - and we're still on the fence. I think we both want to see Kamala wipe the floor with TFG - we would both enjoy that immensely. However, we also thought it out and made a few predictions of things that might happen. TFG will attempt to intimidate and belittle Harris (par for the course) and she will not take the bait and present coherent arguments about her policy points and positions. This will make TFG mad, which will then send him spiraling and word-salading all over the place, making his rebuttals unintelligible. As he gets more mad at being made to look like a fool, he will get personal and attack her for being a woman, a POC, and just hurl insults non-stop.
The other side could be that he will (again, predictably) lie about everything - about his own policies, about his 'accomplishments', and worse than that, lie about her and throw her under the bus constantly. Basically leave her to just defend herself and try to pick apart the lies and find a way to get the truth out there.
Either way - it's going to be messy and I'm not sure I have the stomach (or appropriate anxiety medication) to get through it live.
This is a great question. I also hope they have the audio.

Good. Because you know he was mumbling the worst shit while Biden was talking during the last one. Biden's performance was horrible, but I am sure he was thrown by it.
I don't particularly want to see Trump's face/hear his voice, but DD has to watch for an AP Gov assignment, so I'll watch with her. I'm hoping it'll be fun to watch Harris eviscerate him.

I don't think I can bring myself to watch it.... We're busy anyway, but even if we weren't, I don't think I want to see it live.
I'll settle for this board's re-cap and clips on SM/the news headlines. I'm nervous, but I think she will be fine.
I'm more curious about the narrative afterwards. Does the media focus on him looking like a fool & not giving coherent sentences? Or do they focus on minor/trivial things that Kamala says/does? There's no way he doesn't look a fool & I have confidence in Kamala's abilities to debate him & her preparedness (but let's not fool ourselves into thinking substance will matter tomorrow night).
I’ll probably watch, but hopefully with an IG live with @mosheh. I can’t stand him, but I want to be able to say, “But did you ACTUALLY watch the whole thing? I watched it and…” An exercise in futility, I know.
Probably not. I started a new job and I'm hanging by a thread because of other personal reasons. I'm a bit afraid I'd end up ripping the TV off the wall.
This is a great question. I also hope they have the audio.

So there's a chance that mid muted mumbled insults it suddenly gets turned back on with no warning?
Of course he'd no doubt play the vicim and say it was unfair, that he was told he'd be muted, that abc treated him so badly, the worst ever. most unfair.

Is anyone watching with their kids? I normally do not watch debates. DS just started high school, and I feel like he's old enough that we can have interesting discussions. But I don't want to have discussions about why Trump is so immature that he won't say Kamala correctly.

My 14 yr old loves politics and can’t wait for tonight. He made a Bingo card for the first debate and I hope he makes another one. Personally I’m nervous, prob just PTSD from the last debate.

@@ I teach 8th grade, my kid is in my class, and I assigned it as homework so we’ll watch together. She’s pretty well versed in Trumpiness though so she’ll be fine and snarky right along with me.

My 8-year-old is pretty savvy and is interested in politics—not so much the actual policies but the “why” behind how things happen in elections. This debate is too late for them to watch live, but I will let them watch clips tomorrow. We live in Wisconsin and every other commercial on TV right about now is a political commercial, so they’re used to it. At first I was a little nervous about exposing them to Trump and his disgusting behavior, but it’s clear that my kid sees the grossness and is deeply confused about why some adults don’t.
Kamala must be so nervous today. I wonder how she slept.
Back in the 2016 election I remember a comment about debate prep that was something like, preparing to debate Trump was like preparing for a NASCAR race where you know one of the other drivers will be drunk. So spot on.
