livinitup it always feels like people think they government programs THEY need are totally necessary and that they are totally deserving. It’s other people who need to use their bootstraps and other programs that are wasteful. So personally I doubt this will change anyone’s mind.
But here’s my worry. Asheville is pretty liberal and absentee ballots can’t get to them right now. And just in general are people going to be ready to vote in Asheville in a month? It could make a difference in a very tight contest.
I’m hopeful they’ll be able to sort that out. The 2012 election was a week after Sandy and they managed to get voting sorted out. While I know this storm was far more destructive there’s also a month instead of only a week to figure it out. I would guess that’s already being arranged.
Good point. I was living in New Jersey when Sandy happened and the first few days after were rough but I don’t remember there being any issues with voting the next week.
Although, except on the coast, there was no real water damage after Sandy. There were trees down everywhere but those are easily removed. The cell towers were fixed after a few days. It helps to be part of two major metropolitan areas with tons of different access routes and available workers. It seems like the flooding was much higher, more widespread, and damaging to roads after Helene. It looks like there was exponentially more structural damage. But definitely I trust Roy Cooper to do his best to get it sorted. I would be much less optimistic if people like Trump and Mark Robinson were the ones in charge.
My H’s cousin lives in Asheville and we just visited them in July. It’s such a cool place; I was so sad to see the incredible damage today on CNN as well as hear that his family is still without power and running water. It’s really exhausting to go through even for a week. Does anybody know, is the Red Cross the best way to contribute to help, or are there better, local relief efforts?

I was in a part of the coast of NJ when Sandy hit (still there in fact). My town didn’t have power anywhere yet on Election Day, but they managed to make voting happen. You’re right that being in a major metropolitan area may have helped, but help came from everywhere, and I think and hope that’s happening here too. If it was only a week away but this much more destructive I would worry, but a lot can happen in a month.

My friend and family has indefinitely moved to Charlotte, but she'll go back to Ashville for work. I'm assuming that means she'll be doing 3 12s and staying at the hospital.
So dm if anyone needs a delivery. I'm pretty sure she's be open to delivering the not at all necessary tp that people are hoarding:)
