It will be interesting to see if there will be any accountability or lawsuits related to the stadium roof being destroyed in lower wind speeds than it was rated for.
I would be surprised if there aren't. At the very least there's going to be some forensic engineering going on to figure out what went wrong.
Well what went wrong is that the roof was built to last for 25 years and now it’s like 33 years old. The Rays are building a new stadium but it won’t be ready until 2028 I think. Will be interesting to see what happens next.
There is an article in The Athletic about it but it’s behind a paywall.

ah, well in that case zero surprises. the way people were talking about it like it was shocking I assumed it wasn't that old!

Yeah, that’s often the thing with how things are rated. 200mph shingles are that at installation. But they weaken with time and with every major storm. (At least that’s what we were told when we got a new roof after a big storm. Our brand new roof withstood the derecho we had because it was new…but they told us it likely took considerable hit on their lifespan.)
East coast FL and we got power back today after about 38 hours. The winds were horrendous and this shit is definitely not for the weak, lol. If we get yet another I’ll be leaving just for my own sanity.

Like others said, its an 'old' roof. I was 7-8y past its prime. It's a miracle that the whole thing didn't blow off.
The real question will be if insurance coverage for a roof replacement is available or if they have to play 'roof less' until the new stadium is completed.

Somehow we never lost power (although we also didn’t during Helene until two days later so I guess we still could as they are fixing things). But I said to my H, if there’s another storm this season we are leaving. I don’t wanna prep and then sit for hours through it.
Also. My kid has been in school 6 days since 9/24. Monday was supposed to be off and then changed to a make up day for Helene. Now who knows for Monday.

My grandparents who'd been in S FL since the early 60s, so they'd lived through some storms, in their 70s got a condo in Maine. They were like, fuck this shit. Heat, humidity, storms, fuck all of it. Basically, they became opposite snowbirds.
I noticed the conspiracy theories suddenly everywhere after Helene. This sudden, pervasive belief that the government can control the weather and send terrible storms to certain areas is so far beyond beyond nuts that I don't even know how to respond to it.

I don’t know what’s worse, that we have elected officials (MTG) pushing this conspiracy or that there are a significant amount of people who actually believe it.

The lead up is the absolutely the worst of it. Not to mention every friend I’ve ever met/relatives living in other states texting and calling incessantly like it will be the last time they speak to you because you will surely die, lol. I had so many people sending texts like “Hope you got out.” I know people mean well, but all that fear-inducing shit makes it so much worse on the person in the path.

I had someone try to argue with me that this is real and pointed out all the big weather events that happened due to 'seeding' or that the Chinese completely controlled their Olympics weather. I just stated that I actually listen to real scientists and left that argument.

It’s so absolutely frustrating. Seeding is real. We had a base where I lived before and my pilot at my old job flew for them sometimes.
Doesn’t mean they’re making and controlling hurricanes 🤬🤬

Someone I know likened it to throwing pennies at a billionaire.
I'd been hoping that people might be sufficiently pissed off at drumpf's climate denial and plans to kill fema, nws, noaa that they might reconsider voting for him. Instead, they seem to be tripling down on support because he's convinced him they're victims of nefarious dem plots. It's mind boggling.
Since I’ve been watching videos on how Florida is recovering, it landed me on a few pages where stray cats found humans to shelter them before the storm hit. Somehow they knew it was going to be bad. At least one old fella now refuses to leave and his new human roommate is delighted. I few momma cats got humans to follow them and their newborn kittens got rescued, too.
Happy to see lots of formerly stray cats & kittens now named Milton.

I finally reached my dad in Collier county. He's a retired electrical engineer and was pretty proud of his ability to tap into emergency lighting (generator run) to provide an internet router to others in the condo building. With approval b/c dad is not a rule breaker! Still no power, though. And they did not take a direct hit.
@@@ They’re still without power and internet. They’re not expected to get it back until Thursday. Our nieces’ and nephew’s school isn’t expected to reopen for the time being as they are still serving as a shelter.

There is quite a list going of all the other stadiums the Rays can play in, until the new stadium is completed.
I did have to chuckle a bit at the end of the article. "Gloninger said that meteorologists are “going to reach a point of burnout. What other profession are people targeted for simply doing their job?"

Raises hand!
Yeah, I immediately thought of people in your profession.
