Starting a new job almost 2 months ago, then having a dental procedure that gave me the worst sinus infection of my life (I've been incredibly sick for the last two weeks)... I haven't really been worried about the election. Now I understand why people don't pay attention and, in general, aren't really anxious about elections. When you don't understand the whole picture, it's so much easier to let go and let gawd.
One thing I hold in mind: Joe Biden is still president until January. These are the good times. After Trump and COVID I'm not taking these months for granted.
(I get that ADHD anxiety paralysis mentioned above. I'm mostly trying to push through that).
What helps my anxiety is him still being president should there be more violence as trumpians have promised. He won't refuse assistance from law enforcement if it comes to that, unlike the mango mussolini
But then I get in a worry spiral about visuals of uniforms and riot gear and how it will feed their prosecution complex and further fuel violence.
I don't think I have anxiety per say about the election, but just general despondency about 50% of Americans.... how the fuck are we even here? (yes, I know patriarchy x class warfare + some racism). But I bet Trump would be beating Biden if he were still in. I'd vote for a corpse over Trump.... it's really depressing that 100 million people are fine with trump or don't care enough about anything more than their own pocketbook.
What's total ironic about the bold part is that most Americans' economic outlook WON'T BE BETTER UNDER TRUMP. I've been saying for MONTHS that Trump voters are too stupid to understand that. My H has a different take, that it's not that they're stupid, it's that they don't care--because of all the other factors in your post. At its core, it's both--they're stupid AND they don't care (I dare say they don't even know how stupid they are). Which is nuts to me.
Trump is counting on (in part) low propensity voters and I wonder if it's enough to swing the swing states.
And 10000000% yes--how the fuck are we here? How is THIS (waves hands around) real life? If this orange fool wins this election, how the FUCK do we get out of the mess that's about to rain down? This election will have consequences for the next 50 years. 50 YEARS.
Remember that it is in everyone’s best interest to portray a close race. It’s good for the media because it gives them clicks and views. It’s good for Trump’s camp because then when he loses in a landslide he can say, “Oh they must have cheated because how was it so close before and end up like this?” And it’s in the Harris campaign’s best interest because a close race drives turnout for her.
My psychiatrist actually brought election stress up during my recent med check in, which was great because I have anxiety and then worried for a good part of the week that we didn't explicitly say what side we were both on.

I know you’re right, and just need to keep reading it over and over.

Or, less cynically of the media: They predicted a landslide in 2016 and know better than to be complacent.

Yeah, I'm kind of glad it's being reported as close in that I think it will help get people to the voting booth.
Now, I'm still worried about rioting/violence afterwards from people who thought it would go Trump, but I think they'd do that even if polls weren't close.
Another bright side for me: talking to a friend last week who is definitely right of me politically and who I thought would vote Harris but I wasn't 100% sure (other option being staying home), and she was talking about having an election night party and how basically all of their friends are voting Harris.

I am having a ton of anxiety this week.
My ex husband won’t vote for Harris because of Gaza. One of my Jewish friends was considering not voting for her also because of Gaza, but the opposite perspective. One of my bff’s who is a former republican (now independent) will not vote for Trump… but ‘can’t bring themselves’ to vote for Harris.
So that’s possibly three votes that Harris will not be getting. Two from lifelong democrats who are on different sides of the same issue. I really hope they reconsider.
I don’t know if I want to live in the US anymore. Ugh.
I learned from the most recent episode of Pod Save America that what's killing Harris' momentum is the non college Gen Z white males. The ones that listen to Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate. Apparently that demographic has grown a ton in the last 4 years, and they are the typical low propensity voters (only interested in Trump, don't vote otherwise), and they are very hard to capture in polling.
I do unfortunately think Drumpf is going to take this one. No cheating required.
I had to step away from looking at polls last week, I can't handle it.

I may have misread but didn't Rogan recently say he wouldn't vote for TFG?

I assume this demographic is a large one in some of the battlegrounds?

A week out and I'm suddenly remembering bawling my eyes out Election Night 2016. I think I had repressed that memory until yesterday. I know a lot of people who voted 3rd party that year. This year all of those people who "just couldn't vote for Hillary" ARE voting for Kamala. So that's a positive. I am just trying to remain calm (at least until we know anything).

Yeah, any state that has a large amount of non urban areas. Like PA. I refer to this as the incel vote. The young men who mostly wouldn't give a shit about voting otherwise, but have been caught up in the MAGA movement because 'young white men are being repressed'.

I still believe the polling is off and Harris is going to win. Compared to 2020 people are more excited to vote for her than for Trump, Independents are more likely to vote for her and more and more Republicans have endorsed her. The chaos and insults and calls of fraud from the MAGA crowd are made to have us feel anxious, angry, and apathetic, but we can't let them win. Too much is at stake.
I just created a playlist on Apple Music with fitting and uplifting music to get me through this next week. I found several of them on Spotify and added some of my own. When I went on my walk after lunch I started listening and it really helped my mood.
Feel free to take some inspiration or add to the list:
Freedom - Beyoncé Put a woman in charge - Keb' Mo' Brave - Sara Bareilles Signed, sealed, delivered - Stevie Wonder My shot - Lin Manuel Miranda Talkin' bout a revolution - Tracy Chapman A change is gonna come - Sam Cooke Don't stop believing - Journey Respect - Aretha Franklin Here comes the sun - The Beatles Landslide - Fleetwood Mac Lean on me - Bill Withers I'm every woman - Whitney Houston You've got a friend - Carole King Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder Only the young - Taylor Swift Feeling good - Nina Simone Ain't no mountain high enough - Diana Ross Come together - The Beatles Armor - Sara Bareilles Don't stop me now - Queen Beautiful day - U2 Love on top - Beyoncé Bring it on home to me - Sam Cooke

I agree and I have a playlist too! Will share in a bit.
So far women of all ages are outpacing men. Yes, the incel block is concerning, but recent polls have been underestimating the turnout of women voters by a lot. If we can keep it up, we've got this. Protect your heart and your sanity, but don't despair. We can do it.

Well, thankfully they are pretty lazy & don't vote in huge numbers. They may be all excitable online, but when it something that requires effort, we shall see....

I was just going to say this.
This particular demographic is the worst of the Gen Z group at my work. They are the worst at making appointments and then actually keeping them. Usually a parent makes an appointment for them. If they manage to show up or the parent drags them in, they are the most unenthusiastic group about bettering their appearance, even when it comes to very basic hygiene. If we do see someone who does have good oral hygiene and could use our services to improve their appearance, well then follow ups are not likely to be kept. It really takes getting a job and some responsibility like paying rent & bills that gets this group to turn around and become serious about themselves, in my experience.
My gut feeling is that I don't see them making the effort in significant numbers to get themselves to a poll and vote.
If they managed to fill out a mail in ballot, maybe they'll drop it in their mailbox at home or maybe their parent will take it to a mailbox for them. That's a lot of maybes.
That's my take as a typically very optimistic person.
I pretty much have to limit my consumption of political anything. Back during the second Bush election, I would listen to Hannity on my commute (as a way to keep your enemies closer) along with reading everything I could and watching Keith Olberman and all that, and one day I realized how much of an effect it was having on me. I had to take a few months off after the 2004 election. 2018/19 I was all worked up over everything. But, the cancer kind of took over my mental thinking and stress capacity.
So from that, I limit myself to no kore than a few hour of angst a day. I have a friend who is always sending me stuff. And he probably thinks I’m an idiot because most of it I’m like “oh, what happened.” But, whatever it is, just gets me so spiraling. How did we get here?! What happened?! Does no one have civics class anymore?! Etc etc.
So there is so research that a little worry is actually good and prepares you if the bad thing happens. Mentally the eternal optimism and not thinking about it makes it more shocking when it does. Also, focusing completely on the worst case is bad. So the trick is to have a moderate and appropriate level of worry. Note, this research is mostly focused on the waiting periods between biopsy and result, but yet it can be somewhat applied here. Allow small doses of worry and planning for worst case. Like today, I did some research about emigrating a cat to Europe. Not because I’m going to, but I know of the bad think happens, my good friend will (very recently naturalized US dual citizen). And there is a good chance I’ll have to cat sit and get their cat ready to go. I don’t blame them, as they have been talking about moving back home for years.

rubytue - that’s actually been my approach to life, although sometimes my anxiety gets the better of me and I spiral too hard in the stress, worry, and fear direction.
In this case, I've decided to lean into whatever scraps of positivity and joy I can find because Trump has stolen so much and I’m not going to let him take away my belief that in a week, America will have elected its first woman President. I’m fully aware Trump can win and I have had many conversations with H about what happens if he does or if she does and the fuckers try to steal it.
I’ve cried. (I have cried so much over the last 8 years. I cried the day after Election Day in 2016. I cried when RBG died. I cried when Kavanaugh was put on the Supreme Court. I cried when Roe fell. I cried when Biden announced he was stopping his campaign before everyone solidified around Harris. So much crying, I can’t even mention it all here.)
I’m still super anxious and can feel myself losing it multiple times a day. But early signs are very encouraging and I’m so hopeful and I’m going to do my best to not lose that hope.
I truly wasn't worried until this week. My gut tells me it is going to be Kamala but the irrational thoughts are creeping in and I'm starting to think he might pull this off. This is even worse than 2016 for me for some reason. I wasn't worried in 2020 and I don't know why I wasn't but the closer we get the more anxious I am.
2 of my grown children texted me yesterday as they are also experiencing election anxiety. All I could say is that I feel same way. Not helpful I know but what else can I say to them?
underwaterrhymes I love seeing Morgan St. Jean on other people's radar! She is fantastic and I LOVE her lyrics. I saw her live last month and it was the best.
