I saw an article about the Nickelodeon kids choose the president mock election. They picked Kamala and have only been wrong twice since they started it in, I want to say 92. I wouldn’t read too much into this. When I was in 2nd grade I picked Ross Perot in our mock election. Kids know what they hear from their parents. Maine doesn’t have many electoral votes. There are reasons to worry but this isn’t one of them.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I definitely voted for Ross Perot in our mock election. Kids are dumb. Also name recognition.
Ross Perot won our elementary school’s mock election in 1992. 🤣 Suburban Cincinnati 99% white. I was in 5th grade. That night my mom told me that she had voted for Bill Clinton. I said to her “I thought we were republicans?”
🤣
(Do not fear. Cast my vote for Harris/Walz yesterday.)

I remember having kids voting and voting for Bill Clinton The actual polling place used to have a kids voting area and they announced the results on the news. Not sure why they got rid of it. Anyway, doesn't Maine split their electoral votes? They split them in 2016. So I don't think its surprising if some areas of Maine go for Trump, but right now Harris is winning there in all state wide polls by a wide margin in most polls.
My guess is the schools were spread all across Maine, so the vote over-represented rural, white areas and did not fully capture the more diverse and liberal areas like Cumberland County, which in the real vote represents more than 1/3 of Maine’s population.
The results make no sense in terms of who "won" each election unless you look at the fact that all the other winners are incumbents. Looks like little kids going with name recognition to me.
Also, I hate it. I hate this whole election. I hate how close it is. I hate that I'm hopeful and pre-devastated in rapid succession hour by hour. So something like this really annoys me. Get some real news. This cutesy bullshit has no place in an election where the stakes are this high.

Pretty sure he won ours too.
Ross Perot probably got less than 10 actual votes in my town.
My 13-year-old asked for permission to flip off Trump and anti-choice signs when he was in the car with his dad (granted), so we're doing our part over here. Bless him, I asked him about it after DH told me the story, and he said, yeah, I think I used the wrong finger, though. 😂 (He did.)

The students in the middle and high schools "register to vote" (via a Google form) -- I think the actual vote takes place on Monday.
In his 7th grade social studies class, they had an assignment about the electoral college, and another one where they had to research the candidates -- go to the websites, and take notes on at least two policies/issues there, for all the federal and state races on the ballot this year (president, Senator, Representative in Congress, PA Attorney General, Auditor General, and Treasurer).
I think they don't offer an actual civics class until high school.
How old is she? I'd honestly be concerned why she made that choice and would start having honest conversations about the state of the world.
Eh shes 6. I'm not stressing her understanding of the state of the world when she still also believes Santa is real. Not to mention just learning how to read lol I asked who she voted for and she said idk a guy? I said Donald Trump? And she said I guess. It was far from a ringing endorsement.

@@@@@@@
In the 2020 Democratic primaries my kid decided they liked Joe Biden "because he looks like a nice grandpa." This was at the point when Biden was polling at like 4%. I was a Warren stan and my husband was a Bernie Bro and we were just like, "What?"
My kid insisted Biden was gonna win the primary. We didn't believe them. Biden won the primary. My kid insisted Biden was gonna win the general. We weren't sure. Biden won the general.

From the mouths of babes, etc. etc.
Who does you kid think is going to win this election?

I just saw a post from an old local nestie on FB expressing a low level outrage that her 6th grader was asked to do this same assignment in history class.
Literally said, "kids don't need to be learning about this stuff yet!"
Unclear to me if she was upset about the policy topics (like...abortion?? trans rights? what?) or the entire concept. She didn't say, and I didn't ask because I just unfriended her (my unfriend threshold for that level of acquaintance is very very low. One annoying post and you're gone.)
the idea of being upset your middle schooler is being asked to look at a mainstream political candidate's website is...really really something. @mock elections are bad yall! You didn't even know!
I’m shocked any school still does this! Mainly for the teachers / admins sake to not have to deal with crazy parents. They should just vote on if polar bears or grizzly bears are better.
In 2016 my blue city TX kids Kindergarten/ public school voted for Hillary 😔 My 5 year old thought what little he heard of 🍊 was a bully (but I feel like 5 year olds now see way less news and political ads unless you have sports on - I avoid it with my kids because it’s so awful)!
My kid’s current school has student elections. 3rd grade and above can run, Student Body President has to be a 5th grader. There’s lots of positions for various grade to run for like Safety Officer, Flag Attendant, etc. I think everyone votes. When I left DH alone with the kids for 2 weeks to leave the country for my 40th bday, DS1 decided to run for office and he had to be his campaign manager which is NOT his forte (it’s definitely my parenting wheelhouse) 😂. DH struggled and was so happy when I got home. Girls always win the high offices.
