Can we talk hypothetically- 3rd party options

I know the two party system we have in the US has long been bemoaned and many people believe in the need for a 3rd party that’s actually relevant/able to compete.
Part of me thought after 2020 the Republican Party might split into Maga republicans and old school normal republicans but it didn’t happen.

Anyway- now I’m having a hard time imagining how a 3rd would work with the electoral college. If we sad any real 3rd party contenders it would likely split the vote too much and make it impossible for anyone to get to 270. Is there anyway a 3 party system and the electoral college work together? or would that have to go before we can we have an actual viable 3rd party in play?

To have viable third parties two things would have to change: eliminate the electoral college and introduce rank choice voting. Or overhaul things completely for a coalition based parliamentary system.

To Be honest, third-party presidential candidate would not accomplish anything with a Congress full of people from both parties that hate them. There would need to be moderates and/or coalitions in the legislature to get anything accomplished.
