One reason airport rides are so expensive is because of additional fees that are tacked on by the airport themselves to uber/lyft and other ride shares. So while it may cost you $35-$40, that doesn't mean the driver is getting a fair wage necessarily.
ETA They are also having to deal with airport traffic, which is not a fun thing
Why wouldn't the stated cost of the ride include that, though?
I use Uber/Lyft like twice a year, and I thought the whole point was that it was not like a taxi service, and I had no idea that you were "supposed to" tip the way we do at a sit-down restaurant (but we don't tip at a fast-food place, or a drive-thru, or or or). I absolutely hate that there are these unwritten rules about tipping. Just tell me what I owe!
It is, hence the hire cost normally for airport runs
I tip 20% unless I guess something weird happens but I guess I’ve been pretty lucky, and we Uber pretty often.
I have remained leaned in (and am fortunate enough to do so) on grocery deliveries, target deliveries. Hell, I even get wine and beer delivery as needed. So yea, I’m going to hella tip for you taking the time out of your day to make my homebody life easier.

I'm just amazed that a 25 minute trip to the airport may only cost $40. I just looked what it would cost me right now (11:30pm) to take Uber to our airport that is 30 minutes away. $88.02. The cheapest we've paid to the airport in the past 2 years is $81. And yes, I always tip 20%+

Wow! Where do you live? I paid that to take it to Dulles (an hour+ away) but BWI is our closer airport and I've not paid more than $40.
I recently paid $35 for a trip that was about double the time (and tipped accordingly lol) so it seems high to me. Maybe our local airports don't charge higher fees?

Yes I tip. I think tipping servers and taxi drivers has been a thing since the beginning of time. Even as a little girl I remember being in the taxi and we’d always tip a few extra dollars.
When I take an Uber it is usually for convenience, like going to the airport or going to dinner with friends when I don’t want to take public transport. So I absolutely take tip in to account to pay for the convenience.
I guess I might feel differently if I lived in a rural area and didn’t have a car and had no public transportation and had to take Uber or a taxi everyday for work or something out of necessity.

I won't answer the poll since I don't live there. However my last trip back to the states I was asked to tip before the ride which I object to on principle. Does that still exist?
Locally where there is no tipping culture it gives me an option at the end of the ride along with stars. If I give a low star I'm asked to explain. Yep, watching YouTube while driving will get you a one star, and I'll happily explain. Stop and go traffic is no excuse.
In the states assuming no issues it would be 10% post and up to 30% for great service. I hate the pre tip concept. I also hate that people rely on those tips instead of wages, so my brain battles itself

Seattle. Rate right now is $81. I think rates here must just be way higher than elsewhere (not sure why). DD and I took an Uber from the Denver airport to Colorado Springs. Was 1.5 hours and $78.
