I assume that current college loans will be moved under the umbrella of the Dept of Treasury. I'm torn on how much they will cut back on issuing new loans-the government makes money off of them, so they might be persuaded to keep some of that (and jack up rates). But I'm sure Pell Grants and other grants are going to be eliminated. The DOE also has a lot of programs for Veterans, I wonder if they will keep those and just move them to DVA.
There will be major effects to this, but I think a lot of this is "symbolic" and to claim a victory against the "woke agenda", since a lot of the publicized DOE work has to do with protecting students' civil rights. But most of the money spent on the DOE will just get moved to other departments, since college loans make up a majority of the budget.
I'm taking it as his word, until we find out otherwise, he will do the things he said he will do.

I suspect that I will loose my job before this is all over. Either from a lack of funding that eliminates it or because the strain of being so overworked forces me to quit. We have been operating under staffing shortages for a long time now and there will likely be legal action in the next few months because we can't safely do our jobs and it's a nightmare.
Any funds to schools means that the nurses get shafted since we are the smallest group and have the least amount of power. Even in our union which is fairly strong, we can't get the help we need because they focus on solving problems that impact more employees.

There are such things as secular aka "atheist" (atheism isn't required) churches. I don't think they're tax exempt. There is also the satanic temple which I believe is considered a religious organization. Its primary purpose is promoting church/state separation and combatting things like christian nationalism, etc. It's more of a political org, but iirc they do enjoy the special class extended to religious orgs that all other non-profits do not get (don't get me started on that!)
We can all become Quakers again. They did a lot for women’s suffrage and the abolitionist movement. Since they were a religion from early America nobody can argue with it.
I’m a pseudo Quaker teaching at a Quaker school. Y’all are all welcome. We’re already organizing.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

About 15 years ago when I went back for another degree I had a roommate who'd gone to a quaker uni. She maintained ties to the community in a different city.
She's made it her life work to be involved in labor organizing and immigrant rights.
I cannot forget when she called me asking to walk and feed her dog because she was planning on getting arrested that night at a protest. Sure thing!

My early American forbears were Quaker; I'm a non practicing/agnostic Lutheran these days but from what I know of Quakerism, I could get on that train. Especially if it would help in the fight against nationalism.
Quakers are literally the only Christian sect that makes any sense to me whatsoever as a thinking, reading adult who has actually read the entire Bible. If I were to go back to church, that’s the only one I could go to.

We've found United Church of Christ to be a great denomination, too. Extremely welcoming of everyone, and very supportive of progressive movements.
Regarding the main topic, public schools are already in trouble with unions being broken, toothless, or flat-out disallowed, making labor movements increasingly difficult.
Teacher shortages will (and have) only accelerated the charter and private school movement. The argument becomes "look how awful your public school is; the classrooms are overcrowded and they can't serve your students. Come to this school."
Maybe a chaotic assault on our educators, nationwide, will inspire a full blown labor movement.
Especially by these assholes.
I think this is coming, regardless. Gutting the DOE will just accelerate it as educators leave and the teacher shortage worsens.
do people realize the number of teachers that probably voted for trump? In the states that went for trump, statistically, its probable that they weren't all harris voters.

But I think, unfortunately as it often is, this was a vibes election. People were generally made about the economy & mad at "the system" I can see teachers people particularly frustrated and mad given the last 4 years, inflation, state required testing mandates, crazy parents, tech/social media distracting students, social issues being pushed in school, book bans, and such. Not that voting for Trump would particularly help any of those issues, but it's a frustration vote & he was promising to blow things up and make changes....even if they were really shitty changes on the whole.

It's amazing how all of this is so similar in feel to the Brexit vote - it was all about feelings versus actually understanding just how awful this was going to be for us. And it's hit people hard. We do now have a lot of people who wish they had voted differently, while also having a group of the Brexit cult who will never believe it was a bad idea.

The biggest thing I’ve learned from this is that majority of people don’t take the time to actually educate themselves about how any of this works. It’s really demoralizing. How do you make people care?

There's also a not insignificant number of teachers who will swear up and down they're being forced to dole out "woke" ideology or that an agenda is being shoved down their throats (when the reality is they're being asked to respect a students' pronouns or there's a part in the curriculum celebrating the achievements made by typically overlooked groups of Americans).

I had that same thought in probably another thread. People voted for him/it not expecting it to happen and, well, it did. And now everyone's going to suffer the fallout.

They have to suffer some pretty shitty, serious consequences because of that decision. That's not anything that any one of us (or a whole massive group of us) can control, though. And the worst part is that people who didn't make the same decision will suffer, too.
Some of the most rabid Trumpers I know are teachers. Like, some of my coworkers that I have to interact with every day. And I teach in an urban area in NY.
