All I have to say is welcome to the party - if you look at the Tories and their 14 years of terrors, they had worse and worse people available toward the end and screwed up our country more and more. The semi-normal people left the party (overall).
The big picture: Countless Republicans trashed Gaetz before and after his shocking nomination. His House colleagues' parting gift: a quick leak to Punchbowl that Gaetz was about to get hit with a damning House Ethics Committee report. The subject of the report: illegal drug use and sexual misconduct.
Gaetz resigned his Florida seat yesterday, just before the Ethics Committee was set to hold a pivotal meeting on the Gaetz investigation. Gaetz's resignation ends the wide-ranging probe, Axios' Andrew Solender reports. Gaetz convinced Trump that he's simply a victim of the same "deep state" that went after him. That's Trump's love language.

Yeah once this came out, I think it is clear that Gaetz was pressuring for a role ASAP so that he could avoid this being released. Trump certainly owed him after he was such an asshole doing his work while Trump wasn’t in office. I doubt he will last long if he is even confirmed. Maybe it’s just too much wishful thinking 😭
Also, I am so mad that all of these investigations took too long. Are the democrats this inept? Or were too many republicans working against them? Between Trump’s trials and Gaetz it just seems wild more traction wasn’t made in 4 years. I think they got through a decent amount of Jan 6 folks at least (though does it matter now…).

Somebody should leak their findings to the press. The Senate will still confirm him anyway but I want his dirty laundry to be out in the open at least.

And then when the inevitable concerned moms of America resume posting on social media about how child trafficking is a very serious problem and illegals are trying to snatch their blond kids from Target parking lots, we can all point out their complicity in supporting the installation of an accused child trafficker atop the DOJ.
Remember the first time - when h was looking to put his family everywhere? Talking about how ivanka would make a great VP is she were old enough, Jared, Melanie coming with him, rumors he’d put his sister on the Supreme Court?
Who would have thought at the time that nepotism was the less unhinged option?
I don't know what scares me more, Gaetz as the AG or the proposed new secdef. I am a female veteran, did 12 years of active honorable service before and after 9/11 so his views on females in combat is such a smack in the face to female veterans. That assface should know that we have been serving on the front lines for quite a long time and it's a big fuck you to his fellow vets. I believe he has more extreme views on females in the military and really doesn't want us in uniform at all. I'm also a DoD employee so I'm doubly scared. UGH.

They are talking about releasing the findings anyway - they just need enough agreement by all the parties involved. It is legal to do. They can't impose anything on him but the info can be brought out into the open.
Gaetz is a loyalty test. No one in their right mind thinks he could get confirmed. This is a test to just see how much rubber stamping congress will do.

Since it's pretty damn clear that Republicans politicians and their voters don't give two craps about ethics or accountability I'm having trouble imagining that the release of the Gaetz ethics report would result in anything but a collective shrug.

The release wouldn't be for the MAGAts.
Right, I just don't predict its release resulting in any consequences for Gaetz, other than perhaps provide cover for the members of Congress who want to oppose his appointment. But Trump will just recess appoint him.

Also, fuck you susan Collins.
I was also thinking that this is so he can bring someone else in, and everyone thinks, "well at least they're not as bad as Gaetz."
Is there any chance that all these openings in Congress from Trump pulling for his administration will result in Democrats winning the special elections and screwing over the majority in either the house or the senate? I assume not but considering that google searches for “how to change my vote” skyrocketed after the election maybe some people are having buyer’s remorse and will try to course correct.
I know Gaetz is really horrendous, but can we talk about Gabbard for a minute? I had to google to make sure I was remembering this right, but like...she thought Russia had a point invading Ukraine? There's been speculation for YEARS that she's literally a russian asset, and if not that, it is a known fact that at the very least she's fully happy to parrot Russian propaganda.
Director of National Intelligence.
They're not even pretending.
One of many sources:
Outraged lawmakers accused Gabbard two years ago of echoing Russian propaganda after Gabbard posted a video on social media asserting “the undeniable fact” of purported bio labs funded by the U.S. across Ukraine. She did not specify, as Russian disinformation had, that they were biological weapons labs.
Ukraine’s government, the U.S. government, news organizations and independent researchers have all said there is no evidence for the claim, which originated from Moscow.
Then-Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said Gabbard had embraced “actual Russian propaganda” and called it “traitorous.” Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said Gabbard was “parroting fake Russian propaganda.”
Thank you wawa! I knew when I heard that cold shivers went down my spine and that was the LAST person that should be national security advisor. But, I couldn’t remember why (and since I’ve deactivated FB, the guy that I know would be going off about it isn’t in my feed to remind me). So I’m glad you did.

Alexandra Petri's column will make you laugh-cry: wapo.st/3O6sab1
My favorite is "I Don’t Know has stopped playing third base in an Abbott and Costello sketch and is now going to be the director of national intelligence."

I think he's the decoy pick. He'll be out before confirmation hearings.

This reminds me… I’m be righteously indignantly annoyed at some of the phrases I’ve seen in news articles. E.g., “Trump has nominated…”. NO! Binden is still president. Trump can’t nominate anyone yet. Trump has signaled intention to nominate! Trump intends to nominate. But HE CAN’T NOMINATE YET.
Reading some of the comments on Fox News, even Trump supporters are questioning the Gaetz pick. Here's hoping the report gets leaked and embarrasses the hell out of him.

I think it will be Ted Cruz. Imagine being the guy that makes Ted Cruz less odious.

I'd love to get rid of Cruz....at least Gaetz is out of congress, even if he is or isn't confirmed. (or goes as Acting AG). I'd love if the Senate has to stay in session around the clock to prevent a recess appointment of Gaetz for 2 years....
