Let’s for the sake of this post assume democracy will survive the next 4 years. Who would you like to see the Democrats lift up as their likely nominee in 2028?
I have heard some names thrown out already.
Gavin Newsom Gretchen Whitmer AOC
As much as I hate to say it I think they can’t run another woman in 2028 but I also think they need to avoid Newsom as a “coastal elite”. Who would be the ideal candidate in your opinion?

Nope, not playing. We need to put our heads down & govern/resist. Show up, do the work, be the voice of opposition, connect with voters, get our message out there, and have a big primary to see who emerges as the most charismatic, down to earth, running on a record of getting government to work for the people, and ready to rumble.

I also like Mayor Pete. I am so impressed with him every time I hear him interview. The way he doesn't take shit but also doesn't rise to the bait is amazing and not something I can do at all. I agree that I don't think a woman would get elected, but I am not more optimistic about a gay person being elected. I'm not a fan of Gavin Newsom. Old white men like Chuck Schumer better sit down. I like Josh Shapiro and Hakeem Jeffries.
No to newsom. Maybe it needs to be someone like the gov of Kentucky. White, southern/ middle America. We need a win
You mean like President Gore? Or President John Edwards?
Back when Bill Clinton won there were still a bunch of "blue dog democrat" good ole boys who voted blue even after civil rights. They are long gone and MAGA now.
I think someone more like Alex Padilla or one of the cart brothers could be a contender.

Josh Kaul. He's the current attorney general of Wisconsin. He beat an incumbent Republican in 2018 in a purple state. He's strong on abortion rights and prosecuted the fake electors who were part of a conspiracy to overthrow the 2020 election in Wisconsin. He's been a thorn in the side of the GOP for years and years. He's smart and funny and best of all he's only 43 years old. I'm talking him up everywhere because I want him to be on the national stage, regardless of what he actually wants. The fact that he is our AG actually makes a material difference in how safe I feel.
I know it is early and I agree that we need to be a voice of resistance but I also think so thought needs to be put in now about party leadership. We need a couple strong candidates that can start getting out there and pushing back against the next administration now so they don’t have to fight the “unknown” battle come 2028.

Obama was practically unknown at this point before his election. He first hit national recognition at the previous Dem Convention. Bill Clinton wasn't on the radar until he was. Longstanding national prominence doesn't seem to bear a big factor in success.

You’re right. Maybe it’s just me but I also feel like things have changed a lot since Clinton and even Obama were elected. With social media and podcasts I feel like people have more access to information (factual or not) nationally and even world wide so not as many people who aspire to that role will be unknown because they will have better access to a national following. I could be wrong but I certainly don’t think it could hurt for the party to start thinking about the next generation of leaders now though.

Haven't listened yet, but I feel like Ezra has been very prescient for a few years having outside voices on, looking critically at what Dems were getting wrong in real time (housing/regulations)
------- The Democratic Party has been hemorrhaging nonwhite and working-class voters. There are a lot of theories about why that has been happening, blaming it on the party’s ideas or messaging or campaign tactics. But I think the problem might be deeper than that — rooted in the structure of the Democratic Party itself.
Michael Lind is a columnist at Tablet magazine, a co-founder of New America and the author of “The New Class War: Saving Democracy From the Managerial Elite.” He argues that the Democratic Party in recent years has become more beholden to special-interest nonprofits, which claim to represent large constituencies but actually reflect the interests of the donor class. In this conversation, we discuss why he thinks the nonprofit complex became so powerful, how that might have led to a disconnect between the Democratic Party and its core voter base and what he thinks Democrats could do to course correct.
I honestly think we need someone previously unknown in 2028.
Anyone who we try to promote is going to spend the next 4 years having their name absolutely ripped through the mud by the Republicans and associated with all of the nonsense they've slung at other politicians. By the time the election rolls around half the country will hate them for reasons that make absolutely no sense.

Whoever it is, I hope the old guard stays out of the race. Biden joined the 2020 race late and I didn’t expect him to come out and win. I don’t hate Biden and I think he was the person to pick then (easy to say after he won the election lol), but it’s clear we need new faces. Even AOC might be part of the “old guard” by then. She’s already so prominent and maybe that’s not the way we need to go this time.
But yeah, I want a real primary even if it lasts a year and a half. May the best person win. No I don’t believe a woman will win the nomination though.
We're all so funny. When there's a big primary we complain that it's too big and too long and that by the time it's over the candidates have eaten each other alive so the chosen one can't win. When we coalesce around one person, we should have had a big primary.

We also complain that elections and campaigning is endless, but ask the week after the election who is already lined up and ready to start now.

Mayor Pete
Absolutely NOT to Gavin Newsom. I'm a Californian and love what he's done IN CA but ... to the rest of the country, he's the poster child for everything people perceive what is wrong w CA - high taxes, high gas prices, OVERLY liberal policies when it comes to LBGTQ+ and the environment, etc.
Not to mention his ex-wife is the fiancee of one of DT's kids. DT would have a field day w the character assassination on that tidbit alone much less the fact that he's related by marriage (Newsom's aunt was married to Nancy's brother in law) Nancy Pelosi.
eta - folks are fearful that he'll bring CA politics to the WH and they want ZERO to do with that

We could easily add time limits & shorten the season for primaries before the general. I Think most of the complaining is that they are extremely unfair & non-representative. Dems should use this opportunity to overhaul their system, more states have an actual say in the primary races, not just Iowa and NH.
Jeff Jackson. Start following him on IG @jeffjacksonnc. He was a congressman and when they gerrymandered NC to ensure he couldn’t win again, he ran for AG. He won, even though Trump won the state.
He’s got social media presence, is calm and measured, doesn’t play the attack game. I’m not sure he’ll be ready for President in 2028, but maybe! (He’s in his 30s now.) After 4 years of Trump, I think calm and measured and not vindictive will have a lot of appeal.

Not a fan. They call him Baby Jesus in the state house because he thinks he is Gods gift to the world. He talks down to people like we are stupid and sends out annoying videos all the time. We have had a democrat AG for as long as I can remember (looked it up since 1896!). We are a typically blue for council of state and red for president. He is following the NC plan, AG then Governor. Just like his two predecessors. He is in his 40's btw.

Good to know from someone there! I often appreciate the way he explains things in his videos, but maybe just haven’t been following long enough.

I think we just need to see who emerges in the next 1-2 years organically. Lord knows there's going to be ample opportunity for people to be doing interviews, social media, etc. And I'd like the DNC to take a step back and not put their thumb on the scale.
Although I am huge Secretary Pete fan, and I am 100% sure he would be a great president, I don’t think 2028 will be the right time.
Way too many people voted against LGBTQ+ rights; they will NOT vote for him. He is so smart but the fight against the hate feels almost insurmountable right now.
