In the other chamber, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) set off a firestorm with a bill to keep Sarah McBride (D-Del.), soon to be the first transgender member of Congress, from using women's bathrooms at the Capitol.
"This is not just bigotry, this is just plain bullying," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told Axios' Andrew Solender.
But even moderate Republicans seem open to the bill. "I mean, a presidential election may have been decided on this issue," one said.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I saw a clip of her talking about this earlier today, and my blood just boiled. Not only is this a giant waste of time and resources for NO REASON, it is just blatantly mean.
Someone who acted like her at my work would be fired. It is shameful that this is an elected official and that she isn't the only one.

Sometimes people just flat out amaze me in both good and bad ways. Sara McBride said to herself, I can make a difference and won her seat and is already faced with this BS.
Then there’s the assholes like Nancy Mace - I’m going to be deliberately cruel and hateful…
But I’m also not understanding why this is so shocking to anyone. Did we think they would be any different towards a colleague than they are towards their constituents?

I would expect everyone who is allied to the incoming member and is an ally in general to use whichever bathroom will get them fined, arrested, whatever.
I really hope we just stop with the words-only approach. The hate circus doesn’t care.
They go for the bathrooms first because it’s humiliating and grabs headlines. It’s the step that legitimates harassment. But this isn’t where it will stop. It may sound like it’s remote but it’s going to be affecting lives everywhere.

I'm not shocked per se, but this does seem even more cruel because it's targeted at one specific person.
Little does she know she's probably peed beside many trans women in the past without incident... because they are just peeing.
As a side note, I went to a play a couple of weeks ago and they made both restrooms all gender, so men and women and anyone else were going into the same bathrooms. It made the ladies room SO MUCH SHORTER during intermission, and nobody seemed to have any issues at all - we just went to the bathroom and moved on with our days. I wish we could just do that, period.
ETA: I realized I said it made the ladies room shorter, but there was no ladies room lol. I meant it made the line I had to wait in shorter. Funny how some of these things are so ingrained into our language.

Hakeem Jeffries mealy-mouthed "I haven't seen the bill" is killing me. Leadership should be backing her with full throated support and action, not leaving this poor woman out there to bear it alone and be graceful (because god forbid she show any emotion). You don't have to see the actual bill to denounce the logic behind it, ffs.

In the early 2000’s I worked for a large firm and our office of 300 people had a coworker transition. They had a psychologist come speak to us all and answer questions. The bathroom question did come up. They talked about the process and how at the time our coworker had to live as a female for 1 year in order to get gender reassignment surgery, which included using the women’s restrooms. Most of us had never known a trans person before, but they educated us, we respected our coworker as a person and we got over any discomfort we had. It’s 2024 and I cannot believe this issue has been weaponized like this. So many people voted for 🍊 based on those hateful commercials under the guise of keeping women safe when we know trans people in bathrooms aren’t the danger, it’s men with MAGA attitudes, people who vote for politicians who commit SA and think there’s nothing wrong with making SA’ers AG.
republicans are claiming to ‘protect’ cis women only at the expense of trans women. Leaving that distinction out erases trans women.
It’s clear that wasn’t your intent.
Yes, thank you for the correction. I didn’t want to add @@ mentions which is their other excuse. Statistically we know who the predators and criminals are, and it’s not trans people or immigrants, it’s cis men and they are statistically voting Republican.

Sooooo how comfortable do you think Nancy Mace will feel when a trans man uses the women’s bathroom? You know, because he’s a biological female according to her.

This is always my first thought beyond rage. I’ve even asked the question to people with this argument. In a surprise to no one, they don’t have an answer. They generally haven’t even thought about it because they’re largely spewing talking points without any critical thinking behind it.
But I’m also not understanding why this is so shocking to anyone. Did we think they would be any different towards a colleague than they are towards their constituents?

At my college, we didn't have any gendered restrooms on the whole campus. All our dorm bathrooms were co-ed. I showered and pooped in stalls next to cis men for four years. Guess what? Nobody fucking cared. It's not any more or less weird to poop in a stall next to a person with a vagina than it is to poop in a stall next to a person with a penis. Nobody fucking notices because we're not all showing each other our genitals in the bathroom!
Gendered bathrooms are inherently weird to me and I cannot for the life of me understand why people insist on them.

A college I was at a lot for an activity I was heavily involved with had "all gender" restrooms way back in the early 2000s. IDK what the dorms were like but the classroom buildings were all like that.
It was weird the first couple of times but after that NBD.
I stayed at a hostel in Rome back in the day that didn't have gendered bathrooms and my first morning there there was a naked dude standing at a mirror shaving. *That* was weird. Not in a safety way or anything, just in an "ok, that happened" way.

This is interesting to me. Mostly because hearing stories about the men’s bathroom from college, I heard about a lot of shenanigans…think stolen towels/clothes, soap replaced with something weird, throwing open the curtains and running, etc. so you’re telling me college guys on the whole can share a bathroom while maintaining maturity and respect? Huh!
