We got a routine furnace check since our furnace has been slightly squirrelly this fall. Luckily we called because the carbon monoxide levels were way too high. They set it to some other mode so it's safe for now but won't be able to keep up with heating the house when it gets really cold.
It's 12 years old and the likely culprit is a 5k repair. This was confirmed by a second company.
1600 sqft house in MN. We have to have backup heat as it's too cold here for heat pump only.
We've gotten one quote so far and are getting a second on Mon.
Quote 1: all Carrier products, all numbers are after rebates and tax credits
Furnace only: 7k Furnace plus AC: 11k Furnace plus heat pump: 13k
They said if we don't replace the AC with the furnace, blah blah furnace won't be covered under warranty if something happens blah blah.
Will update after quote #2, but is this reasonable and WWYD, what to watch out for?

We are in the Chicago suburbs and replaced our furnace last winter. Original bid came in around $6800 with the company that we have a monthly service plan with. We had another company come out just to see and they did it for $6k, we think mostly because they wanted our business. So, I think you are in the ballpark.
Our AC is also 15 years old and will likely need to be replaced next year. We didn't hear anything about warranty with just doing furnace, but maybe that's a Carrier thing. We put in a Lennox furnace.
Assuming you’re talking about a central air/heat HVAC unit, I’ve always been of the mindset that if one goes, the other isn’t far behind and I think it’s probably more time/cost efficient to replace as one. I’m honestly not sure what a heat pump is, so no advice there.
My A/C unit is super unleveled and I know I need to call someone about it but I’m scared what they’ll tell me. My house is 17 years old and I’m fairly certain I have the originals.

GO TO COSTCO
For real.
We bought an HVAC system through them, and a whole house Generac generator, WAY better price than anything anyone else quoted us. They just contract with a local company/installer, so the work is all still fulfilled by a local smaller business, and it's still high quality products (we have Carrier) but you get a much better deal. And then you can get like 15% back on the Costco rebate card thing, so when you're buying something that big, you literally get a check/gift card for over a thousand dollars to either use at Costco, or have them convert to a check for you to deposit.
If you're not a member yet, definitely look into it. Worth the money, especially for something like this.

Oooh good tip, and we gotta go buy glasses at Costco today anyway!
