Does this house have potential?

I agree it has potential but it would take a lot of money to make it what I want. I'd add a thin slab of stones to the brick fireplace so it's stone. I'd redo all the floors to make it cohesive. I'd keep the wood walls but redo all the cabinets and countertops.

tons of potential and i'd paint the shit out of that wood and not feel badly about it at all - anyone who appreciates that look now needs to change, lol.

i love the wood cielings and would leave them as-is.

1962. It does look a bit 70's to me also. The outside and some of the other rooms are a bit more MCM though. We just sold our other house in December to simplify life a little and get out from under doing renovations all the damn time. So... DH isn't really amused that I'm looking at homes so soon, especially ones that need major updates. Sad face.

How thick is the wood? Can it be taken off and sold for flooring? Or sold to a cabinet maker to make custom kitchens? I would think that Cherry can bring in some $$.

I'm team paint the walls. I don't understand the logic behind, "It's hideous but you can't change it because someone else might be able to style it properly!"

I love the look of painted brick (in magazines) but that's something I would never do. I just love a traditional red brick.

Go for it. And show us before and afters.

I hate the fireplace, but painting it would calm it down. Also, getting rid of the screen and placing art over the fireplace. I would update the kitchen, but leave the wood paneling. A friends parent has a house like that and it is awesome.
If you paint over everything, I think it would look like shit.

I agree that it has a lot of potential but it also needs a lot of work. I wouldn't be willing to put that much work into a house unless it was selling for dirt cheap.
