Where: MoCo, inside the beltway How much: $2700 PITI (we own) Sq ft: ~2000 not counting a partially finished basement Perks: Great established neighborhood, close to 2 metro stops Commute: Mine is 15-20 min (driving); DH is 1 hour (Metro) If I could live anywhere in DC: Old Town Alexandria or Del Ray, but only if I could telecommute or my job moved to NoVA.
I can't decide if I should play or not. I'm in AA county near Baltimore, but work in Bethesda. Hmm
Own: piti is $1350 2 bedroom, 3 bath, 3 level townhouse. About 2000 sq ft. Perks: marina, dog walking trails, lovely neighbors Commute: 20 mins for H. ~75 mins for me. Should be dropping to 60 mins when my office moves next month.
I haven't rented in DC since 2002. That was $500/month for an illegal basement apartment in Tenlytown.
If we did move back to the "DC area" (as opposed to Baltimore), I'd want to live in Vienna or Falls Church. But I could not get H on board to live any closer. And we do love it here.
Our last rental (March 2012): What area: North Arlington on the border of East Falls Church How much: $1950/month Square feet: about 1000 sq ft (2 bed, 3rd bed = laundry & storage) Perks: Great yard w/doggie door, driveway, gorgeous neighborhood Commute: 1.5 miles to E. falls church metro (bikeable) - 35 minutes to work If you could live anywhere in DC: Probably Dupont Circle.
Current home (own) What area: Vienna, VA How much: $3300/mo (after refi) Square feet: 3500 (inc. basement) - 5 bed, 4 bath Perks: 1/2 acre, backs to parkland, 2+ car garage, excellent schools, neighborhood community Commute: 1.5 miles to Vienna metro - park & ride takes almost an hour door to door (downtown DC)
Ok. I know I am a little jaded, but are Vienna and Falls Church really "DC area"? Have we had this convo before? How far away can you be and be considered "DC Area"?
Are my quotes in the wrong place, it looks weird?
Definitely DC-area, but farther than I would want to live (though they're both nice areas!)
FWIW, my parents most certainly consider Woodbridge the DC-area, and it's a heck of a lot farther.

Vienna and Falls Church are both on the Orange line. DC area to me is usually defined by commute, if you commute to downtown DC on a daily basis (with the rare exception of extreme commuters who come from like WVA or DE, fucking crazy) then you're in the DC area.
There are some places that are much cheaper to live than other places in the DC area. It's interesting to see those so I know what I'm missing out on.

Ha I had to look up where Woodbridge is. I would definitely consider that too far to be DC area. Same with Vienna and Tyson's (but my friend who moved there and is "only 15 mins away!" would disagree..)
To me when I think of "DC" i just think of those places that touch DC. No farther than Arlington or Silver spring people!
Based on your post on page 1, I think you live in the same area as my boyfriend. I've been pretty anti-Virginia after having a not great living situation in Courthouse, but that little stretch is building up pretty nicely! Though I can't tell him that as my constant goal is to get him to love DC more
I swear I am not a stalker, but H and I love the area where you live. So after your post yesterday I was searching through the area for apartments that fit the description you posted. I have got to find an apartment that has 2 bathrooms in the DC proper that is not crazy expensive. I want to move so badly.
While still expensive compared to moving out into the burbs, we found a 1 bedroom that we could modify into a 2 which made cost more reasonable for being in the area of DC we wanted and still close to metro/walking to Cleveland Park, etc.
More details than you may be interested in : It had a full living room and dining room, and we put in walls (full floor to ceiling - not removable) to turn the dining room into a second bedroom. The kitchen was big enough that we comfortably have a table that seats 4 and can squeeze 6. For size reference, the converted room has a queen bed, dresser and three bookcases with room to spare. The only thing missing is the second bathroom which I would have loved!
Woodbridge is a DC suburb. So is Leesburg. Doesn't mean I would live there (but I wouldn't live in Vienna either), but many people commute from both places into DC everyday. That's the reality of our housing prices. A large percentage of people in this area want a SFH and can't afford 750K.

Well, people commute from West Virginia and Richmond to downtown DC every day. Heck, Biden commutes from Deleware! You have to drive a line somewhere.
I don't view Woodbridge or Leesburg as the DC area.
What area: Silver Spring, MD How much: $2200, parking and cat rent included Sq feet: 900, 2 bedrooms Perks: SS Metro is two blocks away, new appliances and a 24 hour concierge Commute: Me- 30 minutes, H- 30 minutes depending on traffic I would totally live around Eastern Market.
