In my current job, no. I'm blessed with a very family-friendly and sick-friendly office. My boss will stay home if she even thinks she's coming down with something and encourages us to all take care of ourselves as well. But generally we can do a lot of work via email and remote access to our shared drive. But I've had other offices where it was frowned upon and certainly understand that pressure make sure your co-workers really realize you are sick and not just slacking off. I also used to work in a call center with really limited sick time and needed to come to work to keep my job; it's not a fun way to live. I get very frustrated with my current job, but know that this is one way that makes me very fortunate and it would take a lot to really make me leave for something else.
Law firms are definitely different than other environments. Everyone comes in sick.
... and that's exactly why I come in sick. If everyone comes in sick, I don't want to be the person who *doesn't* come in sick. You know?
(And yes, that usually means that if one lawyer in my group is sick, within the next two weeks 80% of us will also be sick... but that's just how it goes.)
Yes but only a half day. My work policy has a maximum number of sick days you can take in a row before things get sticky so they'd rather you come in sick and work a few hours to eliminate that issue and then you're free to take off for another day or 2.
No. the first time I had the flu in recent memory I pushed myself to go in after calling off for two days and was completely miserable. My boss told me to stay home until I really felt better, so I ended up staying home the two days following.
Last time I had it, I just stayed home until I felt better.
if it is the flu no I would stay home but maybe work from home some. I think if we are out more than 3 days we have to go on STD or something which is stupid.
No. If I had to get some work done, I could have logged in and worked from home. If I needed files, I *may* have gone in for a minute just to get them, but I would only do that if I were under a pressing deadline.
No, and I don't think it's honorable when people come in sick - i think they are assholes for risking everyone else getting sick.
stay home - get better - work from home if you must feel productive, but going in doesn't make you look like a hero (i'm not talking YOU but people in general... but i guess you, too since you went in, lol)
I find it amusing that people automatically think going to work = seeing other people. I can go all day and not talk to anyone. And I have a small office. I promise by going in today, I didn't spread the plague.
I took a full week when I had HFM in August. I could have gone in Friday... but who wants to take 4 days and go in on Friday? I still looked like shit.
I am not a good sick patient. and I think after my horrible pregnancy experience and the fact my "excessive absenteeism" due to complications played a role in my eventual layoff from that job, I just get worried being gone too long.
I have Monday off too for Columbus day, so planning a quiet weekend so I can definitely come back full speed on Tuesday.

When I was working (I'm a SAHM now) I rarely took off for being sick. The companies I worked for offered either little or no sick time so any days off were unpaid (I also had no paid vacation). I couldn't afford to take off and working from home wasn't an option (I was a museum tour guide, so no way to work from home). It was actually pretty bad that they wouldn't give paid sick time since it meant I was leading tours of mostly school groups and occasionally senior groups while sick since I couldn't afford to lose the days pay.
