I wear navy, dark dark brown, or patent black. I was surprised to see patent black listed as the best choice with navy pants when I researched it months ago. With navy skirt suit I wear navy though.
Anything but black. If I was wearing something simple on top I'd probably wear some fun colored shoes (magenta), if the top was colorful I'd go with nude (this is based on the colors I have)
In summer/spring, I would generally wear nude/camel/bone. In fall/winter, there are a lot of options - aubergine, brown, burgundy, possibly grey/charcoal, red, camel, etc. Just about anything except black if you're against mixing.

For me, anything but black. I had some nice dark brown crocodile leather looking shoes that I often wore with navy. I also has some dark navy dressy sandals for warm weather. Any of the other colors would work too depending on your outfit. And I know technically navy and black are both neutrals, but I just can't mix them.
All of you anti-black shoe ladies, do you think the picture in the OP looks bad?
Yes. I know it can be done, but I honestly have never seen anyone wear black and navy that I thought looked OK.
To answer the question, depending on my top, I will wear grey, deep red or auburn-brown shoes normally with navy pants. With a navy skirt or dress, I like nude heels best, but also love the burgundy.

I don't HATE black shoes with navy, I just think I can do better. (Hence the post for ideas.)
Navy pants with black shoes reminds me of when I was a 1L summer intern in a DA's office, working for free, totally broke, and had exactly one pair of work shoes (that I had re-heeled like 7 times). I had two suits, black and navy, so the shoes were black. The navy with black never felt perfect, but it was what I had.
Those teal shoes you bought the other day would look really nice with navy. Really, most jewel toned colors will work.
I do wear black a lot with navy. Here's a tip for working black shoes into an outfit, like navy, where it doesn't feel like it goes -- have something else black in the outfit. Black chunky necklace, belt, in the pattern in the shirt you are wearing, cardigan, etc. Then the black shoes look more integrated into the look, and don't just look like you put them on because nothing else would go. I do this a lot with black and navy. Looks so much better than just having random black shoes paired with the outfit.
Navy is one of those neutral colors that anything would work. Last week I wore navy pants with bright yellow shoes. The week before I wore chocolate brown shoes with the same pants.
Brown, navy, nude, or grey as neutrals, or a random bright color like pink or green or yellow.
This. I have kelly green and yellow heels that I wear with navy pants, in addition to the neutrals v listed. If I had oxblood heels I would wear those with navy as well.
I think black is actually a good choice with a navy suit for a really formal look (just as men often wear black shoes with a navy suit), but I prefer one of the other neutrals or a fun color when its not an interview or argue in court kind of situation.
This dilemma is why I have immediately returned any navy pants I ever bought. Neutrals like black & brown always look wrong to me with navy. But I think the ones charky posted would work. Or a pop of color, like red or yellow.
Thoughts on those? Ann Taylor is running 30% off. I've never gotten shoes from there, any comments on them?
I've had bad luck with Ann Taylor shoes in general, but haven't tried any flats. I had a pair of high heels on which the heel disintegrated after only a couple of wears and a pair of wedges which the buckle broke off after wearing maybe five times. I won't buy another pair from them as I don't think they're worth it.
