We're from North Jersey and have only been to Cape May once, to have lunch while heading to Delaware. MH got free tickets for a whale watching tour so we are thinking we can make a weekend out of it.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a b&b or hotel in Cape May? Plus good places to eat and things to do (a good thrift shop would be awesome). Not looking to splurge. We will have our car, so other nearby cities are OK too.
We've never stayed in a B&B there, but there are a ton to choose from. If you go on capemaytimes.com they have a lot of info on hotels/motels, stuff to do, etc.
We went on a whale watching tour a couple of years ago there and really enjoyed it. We also parasailed once, which was really fun.
One of our fave places to eat is at Lucky Bones, which is right over the bridge on your right when you come into Cape May. It's not on the beach, but the food is really good and not expensive. We had our wedding reception on the deck at Henry's, which is right on the beach. It's under different ownership now, but the food was always great for us.
You can shop at Washington St mall, which is an open air mall just a couple of blocks from the beach, there's all kinds of different stores. You can also climb the lighthouse if you want, and there's a couple of mini golf places if you're into that. Also, bikes are pretty cheap to rent too if you want to bike around town.
If you like the whole boardwalk thing, Wildwood is only about 3 miles away, so you can head up there for the day or even just the evening and walk the boardwalk. Morey's Piers is there, which is an amusement park right on the boardwalk.
When we go to Cape May, I like to stay at the Peter Shields Inn. It's not cheap, but it is lovely! The Lobster House is good for seafood, and doesn't have to be pricey. I like walking around the mall and on the beach in Cape May.
I'm not a fan of Wildwood myself. My parents took us to the boardwalk there as kids, and we loved the rides, but as an adult there are so many places I'd rather be. I think Ocean City's boardwalk is much better for kids, but I probably wouldn't go all the way up there from Cape May for it. I guess it depends on what you enjoy doing.
