That is probably part of the reason it took so long for her to have problems.

Like the they said, you must be doing something right if this is the first time she's had a problem and she only has ONE kidney. Don't beat yourself up over this.
My cat had similar issues around the same age (a bit older). Crystals are very common, finding the cause of them goes a long way to making the cat better.
Wilhelm (pic below) is now 10 years old and has a clean bill of health. He's a happy and playful cat and has fully recovered. The food we feed him is prescription and gets expensive, but it's worth every darned cent if he's healthy.
