When doing strength training, is there a different if you use the machines only or floor exercises only? Do you have to combine both? What's the difference between the 2?
What kind of floor exercises are you talking about?
IMO, it's good to mix things up. Body weight/machine/free weight.. all of those are good for you in the right combination. It's also dependent on what you're trying to do with an end goal.

For me floor exercises are the one found in health and fitness magazines. I am wondering why should I lay down on the floor and move my leg up and down to work out my butt muscles when I have access to a machine that does the same and I can pick the weight I want (30 lbs, 50 lbs....). Right now I am not doing any floor/free weight exercises and I am wondering if I should.

I tend to mostly use free weights because they are harder per se. You have to use muscles (and yes, ones other than the primary ones) to make sure you have good form. Whereas the nautilus machines provide your form for you, kwim?
I tend to equate the machines for peeps who are beginners, the elderly, or peeps just "going thru the motions"..lol. Also I am sure your gym has resistance bands, those are great for a nice change of pace and can target every part of your body. The trainers at the gym can show you the proper techniques and how to set them up.

Ah ah ah, there are some pretty hard core muscular guys using the machines. The free weight area is just too small. It's nice for stretching but I'd rather do it at home. I have free weight and resistance bands. I am not sure I have room to exercise in my bedroom thought.
