I don't have them, but I've heard they are hard to install too and it is best to upgrade to the top of the line pulls and suck for the drawers (but that could be said about any cabinet maker)
::lurker:: MIL and FIL put Ikea cabinets in their apartment kitchen three years ago. They're really nice, though they did upgrade like PP mentioned. Just last week they bought another set and had them installed in their beach house, so they must like them too.
Some friends used IKEA cabinets to redo their entire kitchen, but they hired a crew to assemble and install the cabinets. They are pretty pleased, 2 years later.
I don't know about the cabinets but we just bought DD a big girl bed from there. We where pleased with the quality. Putting it together was a little challenging but the instructions where easy to follow and things where well labeled.
I've not used the IKEA cabinets specifically, but I will say that all cabinets you have to assemble yourself are a PITA. So I don't think its a huge con for the price.
DH and I put them in 3 years ago. They still look great and we've been very happy. We definitely ran into a few challenges installing them, but it would be a stretch to say it was HARD. I'm not sure how they could possibly make it easier. The fact that you can put them together and install them yourself speaks volumes. If you're not confident you can do it yourself, you can have Ikea do it for you.
Putting the first cabinet together takes a little time, but after that they are all the same and you could do it in your sleep. I put all the cabinets together in a few hours in front of the TV. Hanging the cabinets is pretty simple- you hang a track on the wall and then attach all the wall cabinets to it. The challenge is ensuring that everything is level and that you've measured very carefully (not an issue that's specific to Ikea cabinets, obviously.)
The drawer and cabinet hardware is really awesome. We didn't upgrade to anything better and I don't think you can. They all have the soft close feature and they still work perfectly after 3 years. We bought cabinet knobs, drawer pulls, countertops and appliances elsewhere so our entire kitchen doesn't look straight out of an Ikea catalog. No regrets.

We used IKEA upper cabinets in our old closet for storage. They were a PITA to put together (but doable if you have the patience and time. The mounting system was no problem at all (they go on a rail that you attach to the studs so your cabinets can pretty much go anywhere). For the price, I would prefer a standard cabinet that I don't have to assemble. Plus, they are pretty much all particle board construction, which is less than ideal. For 7k I outfitted a whole kitchen with cabinets & a pantry cabinet from www.cliqstudios.com/. My kitchen is basically 11 x 11 with another 3' on the side.

my ikea cabinets aren't particle board.
anyway, we hired someone to build & install them. I think they are awesome, especially for the price.

I thought all Ikea cabinets are particle board? Are they dove tail joints?
DH made all our door fronts and drawer fronts but used Ikea cabinet boxes to save money. The actual cabinets are fine but ditto upgrading all the hinges and drawer slides. We used Ikea pulls as well and they are pretty decent quality and look modern.
On another note, we used an Ikea kitchen faucet and also bathroom vanity and netiher are good quality. We've been here for 2 years and they are already showing signs of wear and not looking as nice as when we installed them. I'd be wary of most Ikea finishes and would NEVER do an entire kitchen in Ikea stuff.

All the pieces in my Ikea bedroom set broke after 2.5 yrs. We threw them in the trash when were were moving .... waste of $$$

The cabinets from cliqstudios are all plywood construction with the exception of the doors. The door frames are solid wood and the interior recessed panel is mdf. From my research prior to buying their cabinets last year, they use the same construction that the major big box chains consider 'upgrades'. Except their's is standard and you get soft close drawers standard too (which is also an upgrade at the BB stores). Are these wood or particle board?

Lurker chiming in; I don't have expierence with cabinets but have used Ikea beds, tables, dressers and nightstands. My IKEA bed is 5 years old and we bought it used off CL and still looks great (light wood).
The recent 4-drawer dresser I bought in darker color (particle board) scratched within the first week of having it.
I've also had 2 unpleasant experiences where not all of the materials needed to assemble were provided and I had to go back to the store (PITA) to ask for additional items.

All the IKEA cabinet boxes are particle board. This isn't a HUGE deal - if you go to Home Depot & look at the low end KraftMade cabinets, they are particle board too. HOWEVER in my experience, they do not hold up. Particularly if you have pull out shelves and put heavy stuff on them (pots & pans). The particle board pulls apart where they shelf hardware attaches.
Kraftmade offers 2 other levels of quality - plywood sides w/ particle board bases/tops and all plywood construction. Of course you'll pay more for that quality too.
For the record - I do not work for cliqstudios or have any financial gain in promoting them. I am just a satisfied customer and am about to buy another $5k worth of cabinetry for my basement remodel. I like to pass on good deals when I find them!

This site is so great! DH has been talking about wanting to build our cabinets, but we'll never get it done if he does. And these are so much better priced than I was expecting! Maybe my kitchen reno isn't going to to have to wait 5 years.

Exactly this. I thought I was going to have to shell out 20k for cabinets! Now the reno seems like it is tangible for us!
Problem is that they are veneer, mostly. One scratch and they are ruined. I am much harder on my kitchen than that.
I know several people who have had the Lidingo cabinets for 5+ years and they say there's no problem with scratching or peeling of the finish, you can scrub them and they clean easily and well. It's like a super-hard baked-on finish. I was worried about that, because my parents have white cabinets that the veneer is peeling off of (new construction builder basic, I assume).
Thanks for all the replies and for the link to that blog. DH and I are certainly handy so I am not at all concerned about putting the cabinets together - we've purchased many an Ikea product, and we also gutted and renovated our last house in its entirety. DH is against Ikea cabinets but I am considering them. That other site is tempting, I sent the link to DH - now we are fighting over shades of white. #firstworldproblems
