OMG My husband and I still laugh about the winelable kitchen. The people were total abstainers and I thought it was hilarious. When ever we mention redoing our kitchen, he volunteers to start calling wineries for surplus labels.
Ugh I loved that show! I was in high school at the time and you are all reminding me how bad it was... I'll never forget the brown room where the homeowner had to use everything she had not to attack her neighbor for painting her room BROWN! My mom and I were dying ;D
The only one that sticks out in my mind was done in my town. The lady was terrified of feet, so of course doug put a giant picture of a foot above their fireplace.
I remembered the foot one being Genevieve, but I think it was a different one. Didn't Doug's have a big toe or something stupid like that?
Gen was always barefoot and she had them put footprints in paint on everything ...I think even on the ceiling of the bedroom. She was really obnoxious about it because she thought the woman's foot phobia was stupid, and it made me not like her for a really long time.
loved that show in high school and college. Also watched "While You Were Out" which seemed to have better design overall (maybe a better budget, I can't remember).
I liked Genevieve, Laurie (great eye for fabrics), and of course VERN! Barry cracked me up with his little paintings he would do.
I actually like Hildi when the show was on the air because I liked her "outside the norm" ideas. And while I actually liked the look of that flowered bathroom (initially), my immediate thought was "how the heck are they going to DUST all of that?" I can't remember the designer that did the beach basement. Covered the entire thing in sand....yeah, that was a fun one. I tended to LOVE almost everything Vern did because it was both interesting AND practical. As much as I like off-kilter people, Doug ALWAYS annoyed me--I thought he took WAAY too many liberties in the homes he worked (ie snooping around!). I also didn't really appreciate Frank's designs either.
Frank was a little too crafty for me. Vern was the best.
I thought of another awful moment -- remember when Doug used an oxidizing paint (basically rust) to paint an accent wall? Ugh - add a few trash cans and stray cats and you've got an alley in your living room!
