Appropriate. It's not like it kept them from getting their diploma, just participating in the festivities surrounding it. I kind of had to laugh that they expelled them from mass because most of them probably saw that as a reward. They should have made them go to mass to get their diploma. They obviously need the extra blessings. :-P
They still get diplomas, right? They just can't go to graduation? It sucks, but they did break the rules.
But, I can't let it go by that making kids sign these pledges does nothing. What a stupid idea.
This is the only thing that I wonder about, since it mentions suspension, also. I think they should absolutely receive every other punishment, but I can't tell if they are getting totally kicked out. That would strike me as harsh, since they are so close to graduating and couldn't transfer to another school and still graduate, I would think.

The local TV news mentioned that they will receive diplomas, but they are not allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies.
Also, they could be allowed to transfer. My cousin attended this school from the article, but transferred to my high school in May of his senior year. I don't know exactly what he did (it's a big family secret), but he is the family prankster.

I'm fine with all of these consequences except barring them from mass. I'll give the parents the benefit of the doubt...if it is this that they take issue with, then I would agree with them.
