Don't usually post, but I thought you ladies might be able to help- I washed one of my scarves the other day and now it's all static-y and clings to itself. I used fabric softener in the dryer and I tried anti-static spray! The scarf is kind of a gauze-y material, very thin. It's not the end of the world, but since it sticks to itself it's very flat and doesn't really lay right or look as good. Anyone have this happen before? Is there something else I can try? Some other type of spray or anti-static product?
I would re-wash, no fabric softener and air dry. Maybe even throw some vinegar in the wash to get rid of the fabric softener, that is probably what is doing it.

I was also going to suggest a vinegar rinse. It will get rid of any product that has built up in the fibers and will usually restore them pretty nicely.
I have the same issue and haven't been able to resolve it! I washed mine out with cold water to get all the static spray and fabric softner off of it and that helped some but it still sticks to itsself. It was one of my favorite ones too!

Did you wash it in vinegar? Vinegar will get rid of the fabric softener.

When I originally washed it in vinegar it still did this. I put it in the dryer and that seems to have done it in =( ill try to reward and air dry to see if that fixes it

Dryers are not your friend. I wash on delicate, in a mesh lingerie bag and flat/hang dry. No dryer ever. My mom taught me that most things can be fixed as long as you never put it in the dryer. If you dry it, you are pretty much screwed. A lot of scarves, I send to the drycleaner.

If you did what I did to my two favorite scarves, it's not a static cling problem. Somehow the heat ruined my scarves, they cling in a clump rather than being flowy, but they don't have any static at all. I've tried everything, including dry cleaning, but it's pretty much a loss. Boohoo!
This happened to me too! It was a cheapie from H&M, but I loved it. I tried everything to no avail. I have no idea what went wrong. I now use it as a mini blanket when I go to the park or an outdoor concert.
I did this to a scarf yesterday. Last night I soaked the scarf in water for 15 min. Then rinsed. Then washed it in shampoo. (Drops of shampoo) I rinsed. Then used my damaged hair conditioner on it....let it soak for 15 minutes. Rinsed. Pressed excess water gently. Then laid the scarf on a towel. Rolled it up and squeezed all excess water. Unrolled. Let it dry flat overnight on the towel and today my scarf is back!!! I even tried the same method with a silk Valentino scarf I accidentally washed a few years ago. It felt silky nice this morning. I couldn't believe it.
I just joined this site to thank you for all the suggestions. I mistakenly put two of my favorite scarfs in the dryer and completely ruined them as they came out in a knot and impossible to unfold because of all the static they picked up. I tried static sheets, ironing, I washed them over (even trying spray starch) ..etc but nothing worked, then in desperation I found this post. SOLUTION: I soaked (lightly massaging) both scarfs in luke warm water with 1/2 cup of white vinegar and a table spoon size of laundry detergent, then rinsed. I re washed them a second time with shampoo, rinsing once again. With a quarter size of hair "conditioner" in my hand, I spread this over the wet material, squeezing out some water and working it through as best I could. I wondered if I should rinse, but because I could immediately feel a difference I decided not to. I just lightly squeezed the extra water out, smoothed them back into a flat shape, then draped them over the drying rack to dry. it WORKED! While not back to the way they were before my mistake, they are wearable and definitely 95% static free. It's the hair conditioner that made the difference. I'm sure of it. (I've saved many a ratty looking dolls hair for my grandchildren by shampooing and leaving in...the conditioner. The tangles come right out! )
Thanks again. Now I must go and read up on what to do when fudge doesn't set! argh...bah humbug
