I teach K-6, and have received a wide variety of gifts - from clothing to homemade stuff, home decor, etc. My favorites have been Target or SB gift cards, GC to one of my favorite restaurants, a GC for a spa day ( I was at a school with lots of wealthy parents that year!) I definitely think GCs are the way to go! :-)
Out of curiosity, would you rather receive a gift card to Target or cash? We gave our son's daycare teachers cash last year, but I worried it might be weird or uncomfortable for them.
I love gift cards of any kind frankly. I usually end up mostly Starbucks (or Tim Horton's!), Chapters/Indigo (bookstore here, all Barnes and Noble, awesome!) and occasionally the LCBO (it's where we buy alcohol in Ontario.) DH has also received GC to SportsChek (sports apparel) and I have even gotten LLL GC.
I have eaten the homemade stuff plenty of times...lots of cookies! But, I would rather NOT get 10 boxes of chocolates, there are only so many Ferrero Rochers and Lindt balls I can eat (and that would be NONE since I am always trying to lose these last 10 pounds).
And ditto to no mugs or ornaments...the mugs end up in the staff room kitchen (I have a handful of pretty ones that I have kept over the years). My favourite scarf was a gift from a student though.
My mom is a grammar school phys Ed teacher and she likes scratch off lotto tickets, gift cards (supermarket, Target, Staples or places where she can buy supplies), and small boxes of candy or cookies (she puts them out when she has company around the holidays).
She re-gifts stuff like coffee mugs, picture frames, tree ornaments, beanie babies, etc. she doesn't like "stuff" or keepsakes.

I gave daycare teachers 100$ cash one year. It was when DS was a baby, and he was not an easy baby. Plus I became friends with the teachers (sitting in the room nursing at drop-off and pick-up) and they were so freaking poor compared to me. Too a public school employee that feels a little weirder, though.
