DD is almost 2.5yo and around 32lbs. I need a 2nd carseat for H's car. We currently have a SK Radian XTSL. I like it but I'd like to try other ones that are cheaper since it's just a secondary carseat.
We have the Cosco - Scenera Convertible Car Seat, Renaissance (we ordered from Walmart) they are pretty bare-bones but only $39/each. They are in my husbands car so they are only used minimally for short trips to daycare.

This is what we have as our primary. I like it and for the price we really ought to get a 2nd one for H's car so we don't have to switch back and forth.
We have the graco my ride 65 in my car, the cosco scenera in my moms car and for dh 's car we bought the convertible seat from costco that is basically the cosco scenera with the little air cushions on the head part. The costco seat was on sale for like fifty bucks, the scenera was $39 at walmart and the Graco was like 120 on sale at BRU. All three have worked well for us.

If your kiddo is FFing you should check out the Graco Nautilus- it converts to a high backed booster and then a regular booster, so as long as it doesn't "expire " it really is the last seat you need to buy. It's what we're going to get for DS1 when DS2 gets his Britax seats.

If you are FFing, I wouldn't bother buying a convertible carseat at that age/weight and go with a booster with a 5 point harness. I would go with either the Evenflo Maestro ($), Graco Nautilus ($$), or Britax Frontier ($$$) depending on how much you want to spend.
Both of our convertibles were under $200. Our main one is a First Years True Fit which is awesome. For DH's car, which is not used as often we have a Cosco Scenera. We got it on sale at Target for $40.
If you're still RFing and want up to 40lbs, then your choices are more limited and you need to double check the weight limits. But the Evenflo Triumph is a nice cushy seat and has held up well for us.
If you're FFing, I recommend the Graco Nautilis, Britax frontier, or Evenflo Maestro - none are convertibles, they are FFing seats only but convert to boosters.
