I'm talking tote bag/backpack, etc. that you would use as your personal item, not small rolling luggage. Something that fits under your seat and hopefully holds a lot. Thanks!
I got this at Target years ago. It looks nice but I don't worry about putting it on the nasty plane floor. I'm keeping my eye on this post though because it's starting to wear out.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
Love my Timbuk2 messenger bag. Holds a ton, lots of secure pockets, and virtually indestructible.
Yep. I have an xsmall one that's good if I just need kindles, passport, contact solution. And I have a big one if I'm needing a weekend worth of clothes/toiletries and laptop.
Like mx, I don't really have stuff specifically for traveling. If it's good enough for everyday, it's good enough for travel.
My go-to for traveling now is just the standard Longchamp Le Pliage (the large one). Fits under the seat, can hold my laptop + Kindle + files for our trip + standard purse stuff, folds up tiny if I don't need it, and is stylish enough that I just carry it in place of a regular purse. Plus, it zips shut so (1) nothing falls out on the plane and (2) if you're carrying it in cities that are prone to pick-pocketing, you can have a little extra security by putting the zipper in front where you can see it. I bought the Louis Vuitton Neverfull thinking I would carry that all the time for travel, but the Le Pliage is a much, much better bag for what I need.
I really like the organizing pockets and how much it holds, even with my laptop and associated gear. It works well for trips when I don't pack my laptop too. I have used it as my only luggage on a few overnight trips too. It fits under the seat even when fully stuffed.

I have been testing out a new one - Keen's Brooklyn II in nylon (I'm a nylon girl but the hemp version was very tempting). It's been on 2 trips so far but both in the car and not on a plane. So far I really really love it! Lots of pockets, lots of options and I can even fit my iPad in it with an outside electronics pocket (iPhone in a case fit perfectly as did a p&s camera but a Samsung Galaxy only did once you removed the case).
I use a small canvas tote. I keep it packed all the time, so I don't have to worry about forgetting something I need for an overnight flight. It easily fits under the seat, and with the square bottom, it stays standing up when it's open, so I can easily get things in and out. Plus it's easy to grab the things like the iPad and liquids that need to come out during security checks. It's not the most fashionable thing in the world (so I've been considering investing in a similarly shaped leather bag), but it works perfectly as a carry-on.
