People at my job have been known to take unpaid vacation. And, we actually get quite a bit. I haven't ever done it, and likely won't ever do it. I like my pay check . Particularly if it's going to be dead around that time frame and you aren't planning on going anywhere.. I would probably just come in, do my time, and leave.
I hate sitting at work doing nothing too though, it's like hell. But, yea.. I still wouldn't take unpaid vaca.

I think I'll just take the day after Christmas off and work Thursday/Friday. Or maybe work Wednesday/Thursday and take Friday off. I'm trying to organize a snowboarding adventure so we'll see how it all works out.

You aren't taking four days, just 1-2 (you covered three days there, I'm assuming the fourth is Monday?) Still that is money you are volunteering to give away instead of being able to move sooner.
Again, in your position, it is beyond stupid and short-sighted to voluntarily turn down one hour of pay (just 'cause you can), let alone one day or four days. You really just can't see beyond the wants of today, can you?

I can see past my wants for today. Believe me, it is all I can see. However, after plugging in numbers over the weekend taking 1-2 days off isn't going to affect my relocation timeline and/or budget. If it had a significant effect (positive or negative) I wouldn't be considering it.
What about positions where people don't get vacation time? Do you think they don't take vacations?
I don't have vacation time. I do take vacations.
I still get paid because in order to take said vacation, I have to cover my own work before I leave + after I get back. How I choose to spend my time isn't of much consequence to my employer. I get a salary for getting the job done.

I don't have a job offer to move out of state. That's what's keeping me from moving. Not money. A job.
ETA - This is sarcasm/joking. As always, I'm changing my mind re moving. Or I'm still pondering options/time frames/career goals/destinations re moving. I'm trying to just enjoy this new chapter and not rush to the next one.
I should add that relocation has been tabled for the time being. Still contributing to my relocation fund, just not plotting as intensely as before. I'm going to try and enjoy this new chapter instead of focusing so much on what's next. Really be grateful for what I do have and live.
Thanks for the advice ladies. I won't be taking off the 4 days. My boss is insisting that we all (my department) take a day off the week of Christmas, so I'm still debating on that. Nothing has been set in stone, I'm still weighing my options and taking note of what has been said here.
I guess I'm the dissenter (a little) because I'd say to find out what is "normal" in your office and do that (assuming you're ok with the financial hit). If pretty much everyone in your office will be off that week, I'm not sure if you'll look better by being in the office or not. If there is nothing to do, it's not like you'd be working extra to get stuff done, you'd just be sitting around. I think this is a good time in your career to go above and beyond and show initiative and all that, but working when there is no work to do (and everyone knows it) doesn't seem to get that across IMO.

Bucky, the first paragraph is a lot of my reasoning to take the time off. Especially the last sentence. When a lot of the office, except 24 hour departments, are gone it doesn't make much sense to prove myself. I go above and beyond daily, my boss is constantly praising me. As is his boss, so I'm not worried about making a poor impression re taking an unpaid couple of days during a slow time.
I wouldn't even consider it if people were here during that week. It's the fact that most people won't be here that prompts my thought process on taking the time off.
And yes, I agree that 1 week paid vacation is horrible and not enough. This was discussed in my interview and I asked about taking more than the 5 days and the policy on that. It's fairly common for <1 year employees to take more than the 5 days as it increases with the longer you've been here.
I don't get paid vacation as I am an hourly employee. I do go on vacation, but we adjust that months budget to account for me missing work.
In your situation where you don't really have a reason not to work (aside from your snowboarding trip), I would work. Consider it paying for the lift ticket.
My BOSS suggested it. Taking unpaid vacation time is not frowned upon; I already asked. Apparently, it's pretty dead around here during that week which is why he suggested it.
He suggested that for the company's benefit, not yours, so they don't have to pay you when it's slow.
I would go in to work. Nothing to do, easy money, sitting around on the computer...those are my favorite days at work.
