Would any of the recent issues with drug dealers, violence in Puerto Rico give you pause about bringing small kids there? I'm assuming that most of the touristy areas are still fine?
I haven't heard anything about drugs and/or violence in PR from the news, but we went on a cruise that stopped in San Juan 2 years ago. We were walking from one of the major forts to the other along the coast (major touristy area). It was daytime and kind of in front of El Morro, this shady guy was following us and kept on asking us if we wanted to buy drugs (cocaine). I have never been asked this anywhere else, while traveling or otherwise, so it kind of left a bad taste for my H and I. You probably won't get propositioned with a small kid, but I thought I would put it out there. I would be more worried about small crime and these "little" drug dealers than the news you hear about with the drug wars in Mexico, for example.
i've been to Puerto Rico twice in the past two years and I'm going again in a few weeks. (San Juan area). I've never felt unsafe. I've been propositioned for drugs in Nassau and Barbados but it was on a beach in broad daylight with 100s of others around. Not to mention Pittsburgh, where I live. Just don't hang out in dark alleys with your kiddo.
