Tell her about her period before she gets it. Damn, those stories in the Is This a Thing post are horrifying. Sit her down, give her an emergency kit in a cute little bag to take with her in case she starts somewhere other than home, give her a big hug and a kiss and tell her to let you know when it happens!
Any other good ideas for talking to your daughters about this?
I would even go as far as telling your sons about how it works too. They need to be aware of the vagina and it's happenings. I know we had a brief talk w/SS about it

My DD is 6 and already knows what a period is. I've just sort of given her age appropriate info all along- it seemed to be the easiest way to make sure she had accurate, important info and it has alleviated the embarrassment factor of "telling her" since she probably can't remember a time she didnt know.
i'm already teaching L proper names for private parts so that we don't have to do everything all at once. which is great. because now she shouts things like "BOYS HAVE A PENIS!" in the middle of target.

Yeah, this is true as well. My DS is 4 and knows that there is such thing as a period, etc.

Do they not do this in schools? I don't recall my mom talking about this, but I do remember having the "special" day in school twice when we learned about this stuff.

This is precisely why I want children
last week, she also shouted across a near-silent store "DADDY, I'M GOING TO THE BATHROOM NOW. I'M GOING TO PEE IN THE POTTY!"
my husband was all "great!" while his entire head turned bright red (he shaves his head so you REALLY know when he's embarassed).

My school had this day as well, but at the end of 6th grade when it was already to late for me

We learned about it in school in 5th grade..
Thank god my parents talked to me about it before then because I started my period in the 4th grade :/
DHs ex tells the kids to ask Curly, she avoids all the uncomfortable chats. We covered periods last summer. I have no problem doing it but hopefully she doesnt mind my liberal POV cause I had to discuss religionand gay marriage too. I wonder what this summer holds....maybe the sex talk.

Yes, they do. Usually 5 and/or 6th grade. But girls are getting their period earlier and earlier. I had 3 girls in a 3rd grade class who already got their period.

This is exactly how we have approached her period and even sex. It has never been a shameful thing to discuss and always kept age appropriate. She is very comfortable talking to me about things and knows that she can ask me any question she wants and I won't judge.
Pinky knows. Not only did I tell her (and gross her out apparently) but I bought her that Taking Care of You or whatever it's called book from American Girls. She loves that thing.
Right now, she's peeved she only has "stage one" boobies. She told me she prays every night for stage two ones so she can have a hello kitty bra.
I told her she won't be so thrilled hwen she finally gets them. lol

That's true. Mine were in 4th and 5th grade.
I don't think the school should be expected to do this instead of the parents, but I just wondered how many people learned there.

I don't remember anything about puberty/sex really being a surprise to me, but my mom is a nurse and dealt with it all very matter-of-factly. I knew about periods long before I ever got mine. I remember learning about puberty in school too.

My mom didn't talk to me about it so when I suddenly started bleeding and cramping on a field trip to Universal I was humiliated! Imagine being a terrified 12-year-old keeled over with cramps in the middle of the Jaws queue.
