Where to stay in NYC?

THis will be our first time going to NYC. We are looking to do all of the touristy things the city has to offer. We will be there for 4 nights. I'd like to stay around $400/night.

I live in NYC and have never stayed in a hotel but I'm going to suggest the ones that friends and family really liked.
The Empire
The Maritime
W Union Sq.
The Kitano

I would recommend the Double Tree Hotel in Times Square. As a tourist, I think it's a great spot and the rooms are really nice.

A friend of mine rated it above the W hotel.

I have stayed at the W in Midtown East a few times on trips to NYC and have enjoyed it. Good location, easy to walk to things (we seriously walked to Broadway/Times Sq before), close to subway stations.

I just recently stayed at the Maritime. It was a super cool hotel but it was way to noisy for me. The bar and the live dj went on until late. If you stay there make sure you're away from that side of the building if you want to sleep.
The location to the Chelsea Market and the High line were fantastic though.
