DS got invited to a birthday party today. Its at a karate studio and I'm pretty sure most of his daycare class is going. I think he'll be fine playing until its time to sing happy birthday. He hates that with a passion and I'm trying to figure out how to talk him through it without having to take him outside. Any suggestions? If I have to remove him, of course I will but I hate calling attention to him like that.

Tell the mom of the party kid that he has issues with the song and that you'll be making a well-timed trip to the potty. She'll give you a heads up. You can avoid the chaos, and nobody else needs to know any better.
Turns out he has perfect pitch and sensory issues. Not a good combo. This was pre-dx, but what worked best was taking him away from the singing as discretely as possible.
For DS, this turned out to carry over into music class in elementary. I have an entire folder of bitchy notes from music teachers in 3 different schools. He was fine by middle school when vocal ensembles were formed by audition.

This is what I do for gift opening with DD because getting DD to sit for 10-15 minutes of gift opening is a nightmare. So we watch a couple minutes then go 'potty' then come back for the last few minutes and say our goodbyes.

Love this. I'm sure many of those elementary teachers wanted to run from the rooms also. I'm glad he was able to finally enjoy music in middle school.
