I wasn't planning on seeing it but my parents invited me to join them. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Maybe because I had no expectations...? I've never seen it on stage so I was a "virgin" to the storyline/music. The music reminded me a lot of Sweeney Todd (they're both Sondheim) and the story also takes a dark turn. I enjoyed everyone in the movie but I'm getting a little tired of Meryl Streep.
I saw it on Christmas evening with my mom. We haven't seen it staged before, so like you, I had no preconceived notions. I really liked the opening number. I think they still probably "Disney-fied" a bit since it was rated PG, but I did appreciate that it was darker. I mean, fairy tales themselves are dark and not "happy".
I thought the song with the two princes was super campy, but I liked it.

I really liked this. I loved the stage version and thought the movie was a pretty good interpretation of it. I do wish they had done a few more reprises of songs (for examples the princes do a reprisal of agony in the musical). But overall pretty good!

Agony is supposed to be campy. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm a little disappointed to hear they cut the Agony from the 2nd act. It's such a great song to convey the shallowness of Cinderella's Prince and Rapunzel's Prince.
I'm looking forward to seeing it, as soon as I have a moment to breathe.

I really enjoyed it too.
Things I loved: - Johnny Depp's wolf pimp suit - Emily Blunt (who knew she could sing?!) - Beautifully filmed - Meryl Street DID have the pipes to play the Witch! I was worried - Agony was hilarious - Gorgeous orchestrations (hardly a surprise since Paul Geminani was involved) - SOOOO MUCH BETTER THAN LES MIZ! - I have such a crush on Anna Kendrick. - I loved that they lowered Cinderella's key - I've always found her piercing. - Christine Baranski can take a minor role and make it so perfectly awesome.
Things I was Meh about: - Chris Pine channeling Captain Kirk a little much - While Agony was hilarious they not only cut the song but they cut it out entirely of Act 2 - What happened to all of the music in Act 2?! - There was absolutely no point in the brief scene between The Mysterious Man and The Baker since they cut out "No More" - Why bother keeping Rapunzel alive if you're just going to let her story fall away? - Johnny Depp was under utilized as the Wolf because Little Red was played by a little girl. She was very good but it lost the sexual tension that song is all about - I missed "Goodbye Old Pal" when Jack sells Milky White

I haven't seen the theater version.
Overall the movie was meh. H had strong feelings...oh so strong feelings about the movie. He was angry! His reaction was comical. He knew nothing about it going in.
Johnny were hilarious as the pervy wolf. Meryl was ah...mazing. The rest...meh.

I agree that the scene between the Baker and The Mysterious man made no sense. Also, I thought the Johnny Depp song was still creep. DH hadn't seen the original and he said he got a weirdo perv vibe from it. Other than that scene though I didn't mind her being a kid.
I don't even remember the scene between the Baker and the Mysterious Man!
Me neither! I wanted to like it, but somehow the ending fell flat to me. I really enjoyed the first half but I didn't quite get the second half. I didn't get the witch's storyline ending and what the heck happend to rapunzel and the prince?
We thought that the scene between the Baker and the Mysterious Man made sense, since it was the conversation that they had about the Mysterious Man being the baker's father and him leaving his family that made the Baker go back to be a father. It was the perfect spot for the song "No More"...they really should have left it in the show.
I wish there had been more of Rapunzel and her prince, but Rapunzel did pretty much leave the witch, so I thought they just left to make a home together somewhere else. It still left things weird, since the brother/sister story didn't go anywhere.
Overall, we really liked it. It is pretty difficult to take a theater piece and make a movie without something having to be changed or cut. What you get in a film is more dimension, a different perspective and a bigger world, to make up for what you get in a live performance that you can't capture on film. There just isn't enough time in a feature film to get in everything from the stage show with all of the things that need to be added to make it worth seeing as a film. I am ok with that.
