Hi. First time poster in the Pets board. I'm looking for advice on feline asthma. Long-time pet owner, and Jack is one of three cats from the same litter we've had since 2006. He's 10 years old and was diagnosed with feline asthma in 2009. He got really sick then before we finally found a specialist who correctly diagnosed him. From that initial diagnosis (and treatment - high dose steroids that we tapered off gradually) to late 2014 he maybe had two flare-ups, treated with corticosteroids (sp?) - predinosone or prednisolone pills.
Then we moved to our new house in 2014 and I feel like he's been in a state of flare-up ever since. The new house does have a carpeted basement, but upstairs is wood or tile. We didn't change litters, no new pets. I took him to a new vet last fall and she gave him a steroid injection, which really didn't seem to do much, and refilled the prednisolone. He seems to improve on the prednisolone, but as soon as it wears off, the wheezing returns. He's also added at least 3 lbs in the past two years, which I think might be due to asthma just making it more difficult to be active. Eating and drinking are normal.
I have an appt to take him back to the vet Friday but I'm looking for any advice from other owners of asthmatic cats. Foods, litters, testing, meds, etc. Anything. Thank you!
I don't have experience with this, but I saw this litter mentioned on a show that I was watching, link (the segment is the video that is on the linked page), and took note for my daughter who has an older cat and lives in a house with other people who have cats. I thought the correlation between ammonia exposure and feline respiratory issues was interesting.

Hi, I don't go here and I realize this thread is several months old but I wanted to chime in. I have a 6 y/o cat with feline asthma. First thing, stop using cheap clay litter. It's the worst. Yesterday's Mews is highly recommended for asthmatic cats but there are probably other brands that would work. Second, keep household dust and use of household chemicals to a minimum. Third, consider running an air purifier in rooms the cat spends a lot of time in. Just like with asthma in humans, small things can add up and really help. Also, I put this in their water.
