I have an Anna and I'm always surprised the name's not more popular. It was at around 50 when she was born and has dropped since. I'm sure if the spellings were combined (Anna and Ana) it would move up.
None of the top 10 names are in her grade at her school, but there is a Sophia and an Isabella on her soccer team.
I tell this story often when the SSA name list comes up: my kid's name was in the high 30s-low 40s in the 5 years surrounding his birth (outside of those 5 years, it was high double to mid triple digits). I was a classroom teacher for many years before he was born. My mom (also a teacher) said forever that we might have a hard time picking a name because of all of the students I had known.
I sent a list of 20 names to H and asked which ones he liked. He sent back the list with 1 name on it. So that's E's name. I had never had a student with that name, in a decade and a half of teaching. The year he was born, I had 2 with that name, and they were both wonderful boys.
When E was first born, for some reason I thought we picked wrong. No idea why, it just felt off. It wasn't until he was about 3 months old that his name finally settled with me, and I love it. Nothing *happened* to make it settle, it just did.
DD's name is not, and to my knowledge has never been, in top 1000. It's not particularly uncommon as a nickname but it is uncommon as a given name. (PDQ -it's *poof*)
well now I want to know her name due to the poof lol
DH and I were just talking about how common DS’ name is this weekend. We hear it on nearby soccer teams or playgrounds. It’s solidly been a 150-200 ranked name since he was born - sooo not super popular. It’s interesting because it seems so common to us.
I've spent a lot of time with the SSA list as we try to pick a name for our second! Our son's name is in the 200s and has been there for ~20 years (was less popular before that). We have a preference for less common names, since we both have quite common names that we don't love, and we like that our son is the only person we know with his name. But like someone else pointed out, we're also trying to keep in mind that the most common names today are far less frequently used than the most common names in previous decades. I'm sure that's why even the most popular names often don't seem that popular to a lot of us.

I think we've talked about this before, but me too! It's so similar to really popular names, but I think we've only ever met one other child named Anna. It's been trending down since DD was born.
My son has multiple friends named Mateo. I was just joking about how strange it is to have two friends with such an unusual name-- I had no idea it was so popular. That is the most surprising top-10 name for me.

I see DS's name has become a lot more popular, from 50 the year he was born to 18 now. DD's name is trending in the other direction, from 172 the year she was born to 550 now. But the other variation of her name is a little more popular.

Yes! Lol, literally as I was posting I thought "didn't I post the same thought last year?" But it's true - so similar to the popular names that seem to hold steady, ending in -a, more than one syllable etc.
