I always thought the rule about white before Memorial Day/after Labor Day was specific to shoes with the exception of brides, babies and sneakers. "Winter white" used to be more of a cream color as wool (the traditional cloth for winter clothing) doesn't come in optic white.
Computers? When dad built this house in 1986, he had a line for a modem installed for his work. I recall my mom writing a schedule on an old computer as early as 1987.
My parents were both in Tech at IBM. We had a computer before I started first grade (1990). By the time I was in middle school we had multiple computers.
My first home computer memory is printing out a banner on a dot matrix printer and the perforated paper. It was for a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos. I’m having trouble placing the year… maybe 84, 85, 86? This is killing me. I remember I went to Amanda’s house. And I can’t remember what grade I was in when I was friends with her. Pretty sure it was before Jr High (87). Anyway, we had a computer for my dada side job, but we didn’t have any games. My friend down the street had Oregon trail. I was jealous! She also had Nicolodeon.
My step mother just called. Because she is out of town an her neighbor found the tulip surprise box I had sent last week. Apparently, they aren’t dead, and have perked up in water. And her neighbor is texting her picture.

We got a cutting edge TI computer in the early 80s, it had a bunch of educational games and I remember we could type out programs (from a computer magazine) and save them on cassette tape. In the mid 80s we got an apple IIc, which had a handle for some odd reason, we used that for years. In 1992, we won a home office raffle at Lechmere, it included a fancy (at the time) PC and some free prodigy. My grandpa thought the internet was the most amazing invention ever, we had to have it, he paid for us to have dial up after we ran out of free hours. I think our family was a bit of an exception, but most people I knew had some sort of computer by the time I was done with high school in 96, we had ethernet connections in our dorms by my sophomore year.

Late 80’s I had a typing class in high school - no computers in school and certainly none at home. In 1994 I took an intro to coding class in college (it was the most basic thing ever) but that was my true introduction to computers.
Weather really is so #regional lol, for some people it’s getting nice now, for others (ME) it’s just HOT, then hotter. I’ve never given a thought to the white thing, likely due to said heat!
I do notice leg hair b/c I am very self-conscious about my leg hair. It’s thick, grows straight out, it’s dark despite me being blonde/fair skinned. I get waxed, and my situation is currently bad b/c my waxer was out and it’s been twice as long. Thankfully I go Friday.
I graduated HS in ‘96, I can’t remember if we had a computer before I graduated? I def had dial up in grad school!! We were not tech savvy, and I’m not a tech savvy adult, thank God for coworkers in younger generations who help me.
There was a funny Nola meme after Jazz Fest that was like we’ve now entered the time of year where we all go from we love this place, we can’t imagine living anywhere else, to why the hell do we live here. Lol. All we have left is swimming, but some pools even get too warm in late July/August.

Ok douche, go ahead and call it mud. My husband DID have halitosis. We addressed it after I talked to you girls on here and guess what? Years later, no problem. Mofongo, you're a cunt. Eat shit. ~anonnamus

We got a computer in about 1998 and my dad is super techy. But computer's were expensive at least for my family. I had used email at my dad's work in probably 1992, and had the apple school computers for sure by 1990. My rich friend had an apple computer at home around 90-92.
I think we had a computer in the mid-90s. I definitely typed my college applications on a typewriter, and I took a class in high school called "Internet"
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I just looked up inflation adjusted PC prices in the 90s, and they were around $5k when I was in high school. We had a word processor but getting a computer was on nobody's radar. This was also pre internet.
I'm annoyed that because my mom is "whatever works best for your families since you have kids" and my brother is scattered, last minute, and indecisive, which absolutely DOES NOT WORK for cross-continental coordination, if there is going to be a family gathering I have to do it all. While pretending to consult with them.
Plus then my brother tries to guilt me about not being able to--I am not making this up--drop all current plans and fly my family of 4 to go stay all 11 of us in my parents' 1800 sq ft house with sleeping space for 8 people the day after my kids' school lets out. Next week (yes, that's early, it's regional). All because he and his family will be there a couple days on their way to Europe.
Like. Go to hell. That's inconvenient, expensive, boring, and uncomfortable. Also, I live closer to an international airport with direct flights to where he is going than either he or my parents do, so maybe come here if "it's important for the cousins to see each other."
So I just told them a specific week summer of 2025 I'm proposing for a family beach vacation. I will reserve the house I want. I will make my brother at the least pay half. The end.
I feel this. Planning the extended family vacation is a thankless job. People who do absolutely nothing to help coordinate it complain undercover passive aggressively. And don’t even get me started on the “bittybomb acts like a drill sergeant vacation planning.” Maybe that’s not untrue, but that’s because you assholes leave no choice.
I think we got a computer in 1995. I definitely had one for most of high school, and graduated in 2000. I think most of my friends had them too, at least in 1998-1999 and beyond - lots of AOL chat conversations back then! And we definitely got up to some trouble chatting with random people when hanging out at friends' houses. My family and those that I spent time with were generally right in the middle of middle class, at least in appearance (obvs I have no idea what any family actually made!).
I do remember that my college was using "everybody is issued their own laptop" as a marketing tactic when I was picking colleges, and I can't say that that didn't impact my decision! I was SO excited to finally have my own computer and probably wouldn't have been able to buy one myself otherwise. That seems so quaint now as I sit here with my laptop, iPad, and smartphone all in front of me.
I have nothing to add to the carrot debate, except a story about when my parents fed our childhood dog (a very big boy), they would hide the “good“ food underneath his kibble so that he would eat everything.
One night the good food was leftover beef stew; when we came back after feeding him, there was a nice neat little pile of carrots next to his otherwise empty bowl. I guess he didn’t care for carrots!
I think it's hilarious that my lab, who eats absolutely everything and thinks it's the greatest thing in the world (apple slices are her favorite treat, but she also likes watermelon, kiwi, banana, blueberries, cucumber, zucchini, green beans, peas, etc. etc. etc., she'll even eat kale and lettuce if there is something on it like dressing) does NOT like carrots. She'll eat small pieces of cooked carrots, but raw carrots (baby, whole, any) are a no for her. It's the only thing we've found that we eat regularly that she will not eat.

We got a computer in the mid 90's, when I was in middle school, which is surprising to me given the inflation price amount. My family was not well-off and we didn't have a lot of things other people in my area had, but I also don't feel like we were early or late getting a computer...we got one when it became pretty common to have a home computer and they became ubiquitous in school. We had typing classes and basic computer programming classes in high school (which was 98-2001 for me).

We had a computer early because my parents are both engineers. I remember getting a new gateway computer in 96ish in the box with cow print. Anyone else remember those? We had a dot matrix printer with long reams of paper. I used to make all sorts of banners on it and then color them in. Tearing off the holes was satisfying until it ripped and you had to reprint the whole thing.
I think many had home computers, but not all. We definitely had computer labs through college. When I studied abroad we didn't even consider bringing laptops, we relied on the school computer lab or various ones around the city for checking emails and what not.
I graduated high school in 1995. Only one of my friends had a computer with internet (her dad worked at the local university and had several). I would go to her house and we would go into all the old school chat rooms lol. We had a Brother word processor in my house but that’s it.
Even through college most people didn’t have their own computers in the dorms/student housing. It was a big pain to get internet on the dorms. I had a Mac classic (loved that thing) that I basically just used as a word processer. Otherwise it was going to the giant computer lab with everyone else. Graduated college in ‘99. DH had a personal computer and we moved in together in 2001, so that was basically my first home computer.

I graduated HS in 1992. We had a computer and I remember playing Wheel of Fortune and Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (OMFG, terrible game. No idea why my parents even had this or let us play it. It was at my mom’s house but this is more something my dad would have bought. It’s a mystery.)
I want to say we got AOL at my mom’s house my first year of college. I dropped out for two years after my first year and a half, and went back in 1995. In college, I had a word processor, but no computer. I didn’t even actively use email until 1998.
I don’t think I had my own laptop or computer until 2001.
For some unknown reason our Disney+ subscription is now $5? I have gone back through all of my transaction history, emails, etc and I cannot figure out why it decreased in price (it had been $20 something). It looks like it’s going to be $5 in June, too. DH said not to question it, just accept it like when they had free porn on Friends 🤦🏻♀️
I got up early and walked the dog. Logged on and work wasn't super busy today so I was able to keep up and get a few things done around the house.
I started upstairs at my desk and during downtime I started to pull my winter clothes out of my closet and bureau and pack it up.
My DH is working overnight tonight so I had to relocate my laptop to the kitchen table so it left kind of a mess in my room.
But I was able to get the dishes done and run a little laundry.
I logged off once work was done and walked the dog again, then came back and watched a movie with DS. Then we watched the Sun vs Fever game until half time and I came up to my room and finished my clothes and watched last half of the game. lol

Leisure suit Larry. I never could beat that game. LOL!! Those were wild times indeed. And no, I don’t know why my parents let us play that game either. Hahaha

My dad had that game! He'd left us watch him play, but we didn't understand it and got bored. I of course tried to play when he wasn't around, and you had to enter a birthdate, so I used my dad's. I could wax poetic about all the games and kid's programs of the late 80s and early 90s (go carmen sandiego! I actually caught her once). They've made a whole movie about the saga of tetris. I can tell you from experience, it's a much better came when you finally get a color monitor.
I think 95 was a boon for home PCs because win 95 was the first gui that got really widespread appeal. That was when a few of my friends got their first home PC. We'd spend hours just looking at yahoo.
And, yes, I remember the gateway cow box. We had one, too. Previously, many of ours were home built (computer kits were the primary source of home pc in the early days), and I remember it being a big deal that we were getting a commercial prebuilt one.
Our dog is such a diva. He loves carrots. He cones running when he hears the peeler. I had one carrot leftover from a bag and I gave it to him (unpeeled) and went to get the new bag for myself. He runs off with it. I don’t hear him eating it though, which is strange bc usually he starts chomping right away. I start to peel mine, he comes running, carrot in mouth and drops it at my feet. I pick it up, peel it and give it back and he gobbles it right up!
There's a home for this on facebook! No matter how formulaic they are, I can't stop watching dogs eating things.

I wrote my 86 page dissertation on a typewriter (the one that you could see a bit before you hit 'print') in 1991. There were computer rooms but they were low in number and hard to get. When I went to work in 1993-4 at a company as a PA, I was the one who helped others to figure out how to use their Apple computers (they were little boxes and I had to read manuals to figure them out - no one else would do it, lol). I don't remember when my parents got their first computer but it was probably through the school my dad worked at as he helped to teaching computers in the mid- to late-90s.
I'm pretty sure we got a computer around 1994 or 1995. It would not have had Internet though. I don't recall when we got that. Gosh I loved played computer games, especially Oregon Trail, Indiana Jones, King's Quest, some Lord of the Rings game that we had, all on CD Rom. Good times lol.

Another Leisure Suit Larry player here! OMG I can't believe my dad let me play this in like middle school lol. So inappropriate. And I did beat the game ETA- the version I played was Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape up or Slip Out.

OMG yes. I studied abroad in 2002 and didn't bring my laptop with me either. I would stop by the internet cafe every day to email my boyfriend back home lol. Man I kind of wish I could go back and reread those. What a record that must've been of my whole summer.
