cash is almost always better, but this might be the exception.
I could not have justified buying myself an iPad as a nanny/college student, even though I really wanted one. because she'd still receive the same dollar amount as last Christmas (which is substantial!), I'd go for the fun gift.
iPad and cash. It probably won't solve her school problem - I doubt an iPad (mini or otherwise) is going to work for rapid note-taking - but it will be fun to have. If you want to get her something that will help with school, get her an 11" or 13" laptop. You can probably get one for not much more than the iPad, and it would be perfect for school.
Dex, a few girls in my program use their iPads with attachable keyboards for lecture notes. It seems to be preferred over laptops (maybe because of portability in an urban setting where we all spend hours on public transit?). I'm an old soul though -I like taking notes by hand.

Attached keyboard would make a big difference. And the iPad would be fun to have for non-school purposes too. OK, I vote cash plus iPad plus keyboard.

Ipad AND cash is better than just cash. If it was one or the other then cash but since you are opening the option to do both I would do both for sure!!

From what I hear, a ton of college kids are using a iPad with a keyboard in class these days. They can also record or videotape lecures, get textbooks on the ipad etc. I'd go with cash and iPad (maybe the kids could get her the keyboard and a cute case?). What an awesome gift!
I have a hard time spending money on expensive fun toys now and I definitely wouldn't have splurged then. I would be so ridiculously excited to get money and a sweet toy.
I would get a laptop that she can write papers on with word and have all the other school-related software. iPads suck for that kind of stuff. An ipad mini is so small, too. If she does not already have a nice computer, then she needs one more than the ipad mini.

This is what I'm thinking, if she's too embarassed to take her old clunky laptop to class, get her a nice laptop. You can get fairly nice HP laptops at Best Buy for under $400, with plenty memory and speed for student needs.

Ditto I would have spent the $ if given to me as a gift on something "practical" and still have just my old laptop to show for it (if I were a college student). So I say Ipad and cash!!!
