We are friendly with our next door neighbors, but not exactly "close." We've never done anything socially, but we chat whenever we're all outside and they often share excess veggies from their garden. They have 3 cute kids who adore DH and "shower" him with attention the moment he walks outside. (They always seem to be outside, playing)
So, last year MIL & I were out running errands on Christmas Eve and DH called me and told me I needed to go buy some presents for the kids next door. They had just come over and brought a big cookie tray. He said "We have some things for you, but Jackie wants to bring them over when she gets home a little later.
I bought some stocking stuffer type items and took over some of our holiday cookies for the family. That was really it- we never really discussed the food or gifts and continued our friendly, but not close, neighborly relationship.
So, have we set ourselves up for a lifetime of gift giving to our neighbor kids? Could I just prepare a nicer cookie/treat tray this year and skip the toys for the kids? Should I just get a family game or something for the kids?
If these were your kids, what would you want me to do/give? (FWIW, we are DINKS) The kids are 8, 5, and 3 (G, G, B)
