For those of you who have crossed over to the better side...what happens after you get a BFP? My GP here said that when it happens, I should come in to have a blood test to confirm and then she'll refer me to a obgyn.
I'm trying to wait to test this week, and I fly to the States on Monday. If (IF) I got a BFP, would I have to see a doctor right away? Can I wait until the States? Can I wait until I'm back from my trip for a visit (would be 8-9 weeks by then).
I know this is paranoia, but this will determine if I test tomorrow or wait for the weekend.
It varies, but for me, there was no blood test. The otc tests are just as reliable. They scheduled an ultrasound to confirm and date at 7 weeks (suggested 7 - 10 weeks for first appt.).
Unless you have any known complications or health concerns, the date of your first appointment won't affect the health of your pregnancy at all. You could go at 6 weeks or 12, with the same outcome (physically....I can't speak for your sanity).
I went in for a urine test to confirm, but not every doctor does this. Then, I got a referral to an OB, and they made my first appointment for 8 weeks. If you don't know the first date of your LMP they may do an ultrasound to date the pregnancy, but usually they won't do any u/s or doppler until 8 weeks, unless you have had problems in the past (like miscarriages).
I don't think it's a big deal if you get a BFP while home in the States. You could call your doc while you're in the US and ask them if they want you to see someone while you're there, or just wait until you get back to SA. They'll probably just have you wait though.
Fingers crossed for you! And have fun in the States!!!!

Most docs here don't see you until approx 10 weeks, unless you have history that would make them want to see you sooner. Kinda sucks waiting that long, but oh well.
I switched to a gyn who also does ob this year since I knew we would be TTC. At my annual, she said if/when I get a bfp, I should call and schedule an appointment for 8 weeks.

along these lines, do you contact your employer/HR/health insurance immediately? I've heard conflicting things. I obviously wouldn't want coworkers to know, but should HR know asap?

I called my doc and they scheduled a quick appt at 7 weeks to do a urine test (she used an HPT to confirm at that time while I was in the office) and we went over family and medical history. I also got bloodwork done, but not to confirm the pregnancy, just to check for blood type, STDs, and a few other things I think.

Nope, I won't tell a soul at my office until I am ready to tell everyone. HR doesn't have any need to know early on. Health insurance covers prenatal care, so no changes are necessary until the baby is born.

I got my BFP on Saturday, called the OBGYN on Monday. They scheduled my first appt for about 2 weeks later, so 6.5 weeks or something like that. First one was just medical history, urine and bloodwork, exam, chatting with the doctor, stuff like that. We're getting our first ultrasound tomorrow as part of our NT scan.
I got my BFP a week or so before I called the midwife. I wanted to rule out a chemical pregnancy. I set up the pre appointment for a month out. Once I decided she was the midwife for me we set up my REAL appointment. Which is tomorrow.
My previous pregnancy. I got KU and just called and scheduled my first with my obgyn. She got me in at like week 7 for a dating u/s.
When I was seeing my RE, they had me come in right away for bloodwork, and encouraged a 6 week ultrasound.
Now I've moved, and am seeing a new OB. She just wanted to see me between 7-10 weeks. I had to ask to have blood levels checked (wanted to have HCG and progesterone levels checked, just because of my history). No mention of early ultrasound, I may push for that as well. Again, just with my history. A normal, healthy pregnancy with no history of trouble TTC or loss may not need those.

I got my BFP on halloween, called the following Monday and scheduled my first apt for anytime after the 6 week mark. My OB did not do any bloodwork or exam at the first apt as we had already did my pelvic a couple of months prior. She did a vaginal u/s for dating and had the nurse take mine and the H's medical history. We have our second apt on the 13th, she will order bloodwork and schedule our NT scan at that time since i will be 10 weeks.
