I live in Indiana too... I wonder if we're close to each other! Obviously our costs are about the same. We've been looking on care.com hoping to find a stay at home mom to baby sit for the first few months until I'm off for summer break. Then re-evaluate if we want to take him to a center, or stay with the baby sitter.
We seem to average about $1000/month. I've seen some as low as $900, and as high as $1400 for centers. Most cluster just over $1000. We live in a MCOL pocket of a LCOL area.
I'm in Mass, about 40 minutes outside of Boston. Centers in the area range from $1400-$2100/month for a full-time infant. We use an in-home daycare that is roughly half of that.
Luckily, DS1 will be in school when this baby starts daycare, though he will still need extended day (because we have half day kindergarten), and before and after school care.
My area (Houston) is about 200-250 a month. I'm hoping to find something on the lower end, but my gut is telling me I won't be satisfied with what's offered in that bracket.
I used to work for a bigger company that had on-site daycare even for infants, I wish my company had it too.

I'm making an excel sheet of all the places we're looking at(I'm a nerd). What are some questions we should ask and things to consider? I have Location(distance from home and work), pricing, will they let me drop off breastmilk, can we have someone other than us pick up LO, hours they're open, what their policies are for drop off(like if we need an extra day). Anything else?
Vacation/illness policies are good to ask, I would go ahead and ask about discipline policies even though it's not applicable until later on, what kind of openings they have and how many kids are there now (we're at an in-home, so this was important to me), what their early/late drop-off policy is.
We use a private dayhome. She charges $550/month full time, which is on the low end for my city. We love her.
My DH is a teacher, but last year we paid over the summer and just sent him part time. It made it much easier for DH to get his summer house projects done.
$750-$1000/month so far. Although I started calling last month about August availability and places couldn't believe I was calling so far ahead? It was odd.
Haven't even looked into the possibility of in home, but Virginia's requirements aren't very stringent. I think if we look at in home, we'll go through the DOD in-home listings since they require more monitoring.
ETA: Also b/c of where I live we'll be paying close attention to any religious teachings, I really want a place that discusses all holidays, observances, etc. And there's one place that is closed for federal holidays, yet the big contractors in the area don't have off those days, so how would families arrange care if the dc is closed?
Daycare here is about $1500 per month (I only looked up one place online). I do a nanny share with my sister, who has a kid just a little older than G, and I pay her $1275 or so a month for four days a week.
I've only glanced at two places near my house just to get an idea-one was $1060/month for infants and the other was $242/week (so approx $968/month). If J's work schedule changes work out though, we'll only need a sitter for a few hours in the late afternoon/early evening (to cover when he leaves for work until when I get home) and are secretly hoping one or both of our moms decides they want to do that If not, we will look into a part time in home sitter.
I'm lucky in that my employer has a contract with a local agency that runs a database of licensed daycare centers and in home providers all over the county, and not only will they run a search of their database based on whatever search parameters I give them (in home vs. center, location, cost, etc) they will contact the places and set up the interviews for me if I want...all for free! Yay for less work for me to do
I'm interested in a home daycare that charges $1000/month or so. Centers are generally closer to $400/week for infants. I should probably start calling about that.
I'm in the Heights and DH works in Galleria so we would want to stay around those areas, FWIW. I also volunteer in Montrose/River Oaks area and could easily use a place there.
I'm on the north side off of 249 and the toll, practically Spring, so my daycares would be just a smidge out of the way
But, I found them going on care.com. Have you checked that out yet for resources? It gave me a good list to start working off of.
Also, I'm jealous your in the Heights, you're so close to everything. My parents have a place in the Museum District and I absolutely lust their location too, but I think the Heights is just a smidge more family friendly.

A few places I looked are $150-$200 for 5 days a week. I'm not sure if I would say I'm in a LCOL area, maybe medium low? I will probably end up closer to the $200 range. i found one that looks really nice near my work. I'm a little unsure of the $150 place. I'm considering going to 4 10's for my job. DH works weekends in the summer and 4 10's in the winter...so there is opportunity for doing only 3 or so days a week. I just need to make sure they are flexible with days, etc. (the places I talked to said you can just let them know the week before).
