This morning, I had a job interview (3rd round) and realized it's not a good fit. The reason being is it's a very small company with limited resources and it's a newly-created position in a dept (my field) that does not yet exist. So its kinda risky. Plus, I think I'd be easily frustrated being the only person in my dept and not really having anyone to work on projects with. I've only worked in large corporations that have fully-functioning departments in my field and lots of work friends/teammates. The only pro to the new job is that it is much closer to home and would pay a decent salary. Still not worth leaving my job for, though.
How should I word my thank you email, asking them politely to remove me from their list of candidates? I'd hate to offend anyone!
Thank you for the opportunity to interview with [people this time] for [position]. At this point I don't feel that I would be a good fit for this position, and would like to be removed from consideration. I wish you all the best in finding a suitable candidate.
Sincerely, annalatte
ETA: But a phone call stating the above would probably be better. Yes, it will be potentially uncomfortable, but stick to the script and it should be fine. You could even say that upon further consideration, you don't feel you'd be a good fit for a small company.
Ditto DrLoretta. At first, I was like "why bother?", but for the fact that this is 3rd round, you're pretty far along. Don't want them to waste their time discussing you. And if they are close to home, you never know if down the road something else may come along that would be a better fit!

I agree. 3rd round is pretty far and is likely down to a few candidates. You can make this an easy decision for them.
